June 15, 1720 - We Are Moving Forward With Our Plans To Extract Silver From Lead

On Friday last, Notice was given in this Paper, that a House was provided for carrying on the Undertaking to extract Silver from Lead, &c. desiring all Persons possess’d of 5000l. Stock therein, to meet at the Vine Tavern to chuse Managers as [sic] this Day, and concert the most beneficial Manner of Proceeding. His Majesty’s most gracious Proclamation laying no Restraint thereon, it is highly necessary the Persons concern’d will not fail to meet at the Place aforesaid, this Day, at 4 in the Afternoon, for that purpose, there being no question of its being of very grewat Advantage to all Gentlemen concern’d.

June 14, 1720 - Investment Opportunity: Let’s Turn Quicksilver Into Real Silver

Being Proposals for raising of Two Millions for effecting the Transmutation of Fluid Mercury or Quicksilver, into a solid and malleable Body, so that ’twill spread under the Hammer, and be of equal Use, Beauty, and Value, with the purest Standard Silver; pursuant to which, Permits will begin to be deliver’d out, and continue till compleated, to Morrow, being the 15th Instant, at the Fountain Tavern, Stocks-market, from the Hours of 12 to 3, paying 6d. per Cent for the Permit, as a Gratuity for the Projector and Company. N.B. ’Tis demonstrable, by a just Calculation, that each Subscriber will get above 800 per Cent. When full, shall open the Books, and proceed to chuse a Governor and Directors.

June 14, 1720 - We Really Do Intend To Start A Business Supplying London With Hay And Straw

Whereas Advertisement hath been given in the Daily-Post the 11th of this Instant June, of a Copartnership to furnish the City of London and Westminster, and the Suburbs thereunto belonging, with Hay and Straw, This is to give Notice, that the said Copartnership is real; for that the Co-partners are now actually applying for a Patent, and may be satisfy’d of the Truth thereof, by applying at the Great James in Bishopsgate Street.

This is to notify that Books will be open’d at Garraway’s Coffee-house, Up-Stairs, on Saturday next, for entering the Names of such Persons who have Permits, in order for the effectual Settling of the Island of Blanco and Sal Tortugas. From Nine a-Clock in the Morning until 12, and no longer. N.B. As no Money was paid at the Delivery of the Permits, none is to be receiv’d for such Entry, it being the Intent of the Persons concern’d first to obtain a Grant.

June 7, 1720 - By Popular Demand, We Are Welcoming Further Investors For Our Plan To Make Money Through Alchemy

Upon delivering the Permits (at the Vine Tavern behind the Royal Exchange) for extracting Silver from Lead and other Metals, at the earnest Sollicitation of many eminent Merchants and others, who are fully determin’d to enter upon the Execution of the said Undertaking without Loss of Time, it was agreed to enlarge the Subscription, and make it 3 Millions.

June 6, 1720 - Investment Opportunity: Trading In Hair

Of Universal Benefit.

Whereas Hair, being a Commodity whose Consumption is equal to, if not exceeds most of the Necessaries used in Dress by both Sexes; this is to give Notice, that Proposals having been privately offer’d, and which have met with uncommon Encouragement from several Members of Parliament and other Persons of Distinction, a Copartnership has been settled and agreed on, some Days since, for Trading in Hair to all Parts of Great Britain, which will lower the very great Price it now bears, (more than can be at present express’d) by such a Joint-Trade. All Places near the Royal Exchange being so much crowded at this Juncture, the Gentlemen concern’d in this useful Undertaking, have thought it more convenient for Subscribers, to deliver out Permits at 5s. 6d. each, at the Ship Tavern in Pater-noster Row, on Thursday next being the 9th Instant, from 9 in the Morning to 3 in the Afternoon.

May 31, 1720 - Investment Opportunity: Domestically-Produced Calico

For effectually preventing the Complaints of the Weavers against the Callicoes, (so favour’d by the Ladies,) an Experiment has been try’d and found practicable for making of Callicoes and Muslins here, in which they will be employ’d; and a Method is found out for improving of Cotton Wooll of our own Plantations, so as to work it to as great Perfection as that wrought in India, (which will be laid before the Lords Commissioners of the Plantations, who have Orders from his Majesty to draw up a Scheme to redress the Grievances of the Weavers, &c.) This Undertaking is at present proposed to be carry’d on by Copartnership, ‘till a Charter can be obtain’d, with a Joint-Stock not exceeding Three Millions Sterling. To which End Permits will be deliver’d out this Day at 10 a Clock, at the Bull-Head Tavern in Gracechurch-street, and a Day will speedily be appointed to chuse Managers, to agree to a Deed of Settlement drawn by Council; and a Sum not exceeding 5s. per Cent. to be call’d in, and lodg’d in the Hands of an eminent Banker in Lombard-street, who will give accountable Receipts for the same, if this Undertaking cannot be legally establish’d; but being intended for a General Good, the Favour of our just Government is not doubted, which will be solicited in a legal Way. N.B. Great Part being agreed for already, no Permits will be deliver’d after this Day.

May 30, 1720 - Investment Opportunity: We’re Going To Grow Hemp In Scotland!

A Design is set on Foot, and Legal Measures are taken to obtain a Charter from the Government, for Planting Hemp in Scotland and Ireland, in order to make Sail-Cloth, Cordage for Shipping, &c. and Nets of all sorts for Fishing, by an Incorporated Society consisting of Persons of Character and Substance, who are provided with the ablest Manufacturers of each Sort to carry on the Design in good Earnest, for the Honour and Advantage of the Government, as will [sic] as for the Profit of the Adventurers; of which Publick Notice shall be given in a little Time. Any Person who in the Interim desires further Satisfaction, may Enquire of Mr. Long, Banker, at the Blackmore’s-Head in Lombard-street.
