I’ve never known Bucharest. I’ve never known how wonderfully web-like its plan is...It reminds me of a stained glass window. The streets are not overly planned, just point to point, creating interesting shapes for blocks. I love drawing these city maps but I would be thrilled to be able to watercolor the blocks. Happy Monday y’all! Hello from the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, Romania! Just grand. The scale of this building is so big that I had to park wayyy on the other side of the street and set my tripod even further to capture the entirety of this building. This was completed in 1997 and took 13 years to construct. The building was designed and supervised by chief architect Anca Petrescu, with a team of approximately 700 architects. 700 architects! Isn’t that freaking insane?! That’s enough jobs for my professional network and all 6 degrees of their archi-friends! 🙀 Sometimes the facts about some of these monuments are as impressive as the structures themselves. The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania weighs 4 billion kgs and is the heaviest building in the world. It was built on the orders of the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. It was only 70% complete at the time of his demise in 1989, and the majority of the building remains vacant. It took 20,000 workers and 700 architects to build this massive structure that boasts 12 stories, 1,100 rooms and a nuclear bunker. The best way to guage the size of the building is to take the 1 hour tour – less than 5% of the building is visited. Some of the interior is stunning in its opulence and the chandeliers are stunning. Puc 4 shows Boulevard Unirii from Constitution Square in front of the Palace of Parliament to Alba Iulia Square, the boulevard is longer and wider than Champs-Élysées of Paris, on which it is based.
