Buckbean (Menyanthes Trifoliata)
Blake and I headed up into the mountains yesterday to make the most of a glorious spring day, which was cool and illuminated by a beautful, flooding sunlight. At this time of year, there is still significant variation in the progression of the spring forests from the valleys to the summits, often with a temperature differential of from 5 to 10 degrees. Down on Gandy Creek, the fly fisherman were out in force after a trout stocking, but Blake's fly-fishing gear is out of commission right now, so he could only watch in envy. He's a great salamander hunter, however, and he did catch a gorgeous northern two-lined salamader (Eurycea bislineata), which reaches its southern-most range around these parts.
You know I'm slightly obsessed with Buckbean, I just have to know more about this fellow 🤫💬
Hahah Buckbean!! MY MAN! *finger guns*
💬 He got his name from always returning home covered in the plant! The usual seaweed/shell decor didn't cut it for him, he wanted to be decked out in flowers too 😌 He has to replace them since the flowers whither or fall off, but that's the fun part! Getting to roll around in mats of buckbean all over again!
🤫 Buckbean adores his brother, Fat Fin, and tries not to be jealous of him. He's smaller than an average male zorca, and timid as well. Their mother gave Fat Fin the majority of the bounty she hunted, leaving him only the scraps. He knows who's at fault, but he cant help but wonder what life would be like if he were big, strong, and confident.
Bonus: There are times when Buckbean is dozing by the shorelines, he wakes up to find a nice juicy squid. He's completely unaware that Fat Fin has been doing this for several years now.
It kills me that @SamWJournal comes up with great names for @buckysjournal.
