The memories coming back had been miserable in more ways than one. For starters having to get past the Soviet built block -- the pain and the nausea had been hard. Not too hard for her. She had managed it, at any rate. The next pain had been ... the knowledge. Not a child with loving parents but an orphan. Not a ballerina, but an assassin. Not a woman with a loving husband, but a cold, loveless marriage, the man she had loved taken from her.
She would not leave James to the Red Room. Supposedly gone, but always there to cause problems once more. She would not leave James to be used, or to be terminated as they saw fit.
The widow slipped in like a shadow in the night, the tenth old Soviet lab she had checked. Slipping down to the basement, undetected as she started looking through cold storage. Looking for a familiar face. Her breath caught, blowing out in one cool puff of white air as she reached forward quickly keying in activation.
Natasha had never been much for praying, but maybe this once .... Matt’s God would take pity on her. At least let me be able to talk to him. Let me be able to get through to him.
