Whadya mean we have no water?
Whadya mean we have no water?
Ding dong! Door opens with “No water until 6pm today, tomorrow and…?”
Welcome to the world of bucket baths, no water during the day and insufficient in mornings and evenings for normal daily use.
When my partner and I left for Canada and the UK in June, monsoon was just kicking off. We had hopes our time away would coincide with the worst of the torrential rains. Let’s face it – monsoon in Mumbai

Nothing better than a bath in the sunshine.

Simple and cheap things you can do to be greener (and save money).
Washing clothes
Use a Front Load washer
Wash loads in cold water with cold water detergent -- except for bath towels, underwear, & socks (warm or hot), and kitchen towels/cloths (hot).
Be skimpy with detergent. Seriously, unless you are doing something that's heavy dirty work, you can use 1/2 to 2/3 of what they suggest. Pretreat spots/ground in dirt. (Overuse of detergent shortens the life of both clothes and washing machine.)
Use homemade liquid softener
Use drying racks/line dry everything except sheets, towels, undies and socks. If you live where it's dry, an indoor drying rack puts a little moisture in the air. (If you live where it's very humid, don't use a drying rack inside if there's a risk of your clothes becoming moldy or mildewed or if there are already mold/mildew problems in your house.)
Lessening the use of the dryer reduces wear and tear on your clothes, so they look newer longer.
Personal Hygene
Bathing
Unless you do something that's hard physical labor or do an intense workout every day, or it's been nasty hot and humid, you may not need to bathe/shower every day. On the days that you don't bathe, take a PTA Shower.
When you do bathe:
Take a 'Navy Shower'
Take bucket baths
Both of these get you squeaky clean in under 6 gallons/20 liters of water.
(As an aside, here's a link on how to scrub up when you need to bathe, but can't pour water on yourself, eg, a public restroom.)
Brushing Your Teeth
Don't run the water while you brush. Only turn it on to wet the brush, rinse the spit out of the sink, and clean the brush.
Flushing Your toilet
use a low flow toilet, or if you have an old one, put a few large rocks or a small brick in the tank to make it a low flow toilet
don't flush pee; flush poop. (If nothing else, the pee in the bowl will stop your pets from drinking there.)
Bucket bathing by candlelight. Africa, you test me.
Getting My Crafty on
Right I have 2 days off including today and its time to get my shit together and do some sewing and knitting. I don't feel like it but if I sit on my arse on Tumblr any more it will be next week and I will be lamenting my lack of anything achieved.....
However first I must take a wash in a bucket because of a broken pipe that the husbeast fixed late late late last night after waiting for SA Water to come fix our broken water meter (water everywhere people but outside not inside) all afternoon. We have no running water for another 11 hours so its bucket baths after I stocked up on water before he turned it off. Back to basics (sort of) for us this weekend. The joys!
Other thing to do is get Les Kiddos to help me put the Christmas tree up and hopefully I will grow a bit of Christmas spirit.. Anyone else out there finding it hard to get in the spirit this year??
So the aim is to make something today and post pics here of it later and to successfully bath out of a bucket, put the Christmas tree up and drink a lot more coffee.....
“And in this moment, like a swift intake of breath, the rain came.”
The rain started when I was sleeping but wasn’t unexpected. It is still raining but hardly, only drop by drop slowly, and I can hear the drops falling on the umbrella. The day has a calmness about it despite the rain. The house is dark and quiet. Today is…
