June 24, 1995: Buck O'Neil speaks at Yankee Stadium before a game against the Blue Jays. He was there for the Yankees' tribute to the 75th anniversary of the Negro Leagues, which featured a "daylong tribute" (according to The New York Times) and a flag commemorating that anniversary that was raised and would remain on the facade of the stadium throughout the season. ⚾ We didn't know he'd be there. Our attendance at this game was happenstance -- I was awakened by a phone call from my friend Brian. "Hey," he said. "A guy at work gave me box seats to today's Yankee game at 1 o'clock. You wanna go?" I made sure to bring my camera, and when I saw the shock of white hair walking from the Yankees dugout to the microphone during the pregame ceremony, I knew -- from having watched Ken Burns' "Baseball" -- that it was O'Neil. ⚾ I don't remember anything else, unfortunately. I came across this photo the other day when looking for something else and knew I wanted to post it today, when MLB celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues' beginning. I had to go to the Times' archive to find out why O'Neil was even there. The Yankees won 10-2 -- I have pictures of Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs and I think Roberto Alomar I may scan and post later -- and on the way home, I made sure to take a picture of Brendan Byrne Arena from the New Jersey Turnpike. That night, the Devils finished off the Red Wings for their first Stanley Cup. ⚾ But the highlight of the day as I now think of it is my one chance to see Buck O'Neil in person. ⚾ #buckoneil #negroleaguebaseball #negroleagues #negroleagues100 #yankeestadium #mlb @negroleagueshistory @negroleaguebaseball @theotherboysofsummer @nlbmprez @jposnanski @briroach13 (at Yankee Stadium) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD-AZAogj1L/?igshid=p6vd5qfkntn8
