It will never live up to the sea, she thinks, but it would do.

The cart rocks, not pitches, dipping into divots when the wheels turn just so, and the tall grass shifts as the wind whispers through it, telling secrets she longs to know but perhaps already knows. It does no good wondering, and Bran soldiers on, fortifies herself for the journey, and knows that soon she will see the crashing waves again.

Soon she will be put to sleep by the ever-shifting movement of the ship and when the wanderlust fades, she will come to port where she knows best. But for now, she makes her bed on the still, cold ground and imagines the sound of the sea.

It will never live up to the sea, she thinks, but then nothing can.

“Are you asking me out on a date? Like a real and proper date?” She wants to laugh, but it seems unfair. He scratches the back of his head. “Is that okay?”

“You better buy me more than just coffee, boy wonder.” There’s the nudge at his ribs that he’s grown used to, the fond closeness they’ve shared forever, and she’s rewarded with an easy smile. “That can probably be arranged.”

Etain falls in love with the girl at the bookstore, the one who is quick and clever and saves her new books. She falls in love with the girl at the bookstore, the one who binds the blank books when it is slow and even if they are slightly too big for a hafling, Etain will buy one when she has filled hers. She falls in love because of a gentle smile and rosy cheeks and stays in love because of a kind heart.

Esra falls in love with stability and freedom, the calming knowledge that things will be okay. She falls in love with compassion because pity has been her adversary, falls in love with darkness because it has raised her. Black feathers still litter the floor where she walks but they always have and will always remain.

Sunlight makes the best patterns as it finds its way through the creeping vines and sagged netting that drapes across the large, East facing window in her room. She rigged it up herself, on tiptoes and book stacks, her tongue pushed out of her mouth in careful concentration. Her mother had come in, curious about the hammering and only shook her head with a smile.

Sunlight is the best remedy, reflecting in the brightness of a child’s eyes as the cough subsides, as the scrape patches over. It keeps them hale and hearty as they grow like weeds and her mother laughs because not everything needs the same care as plants, but sometimes it is enough to start.

Sunlight shows the patterns best, the gentle dapples of deeper bay in the coat of her favorite mount, the one who’s side she rests against in the dusk light when she’s reading in the meadow. It shows more when she’s groomed, an overturned bucket turned stool to best reach her withers. Her mother brings sun-warm water for rinsing, and offers a splash with a grin.

(Sunlight is what catches off the hair of the girl she loves, when she realized she could just like the heroes who saved the world, the ones she reads about in books instead of doing her chores.)
