February 17, 2019 - Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Calidris subruficollis)

These sandpipers breed in far northern Canada and Alaska and winter in southern South America, migrating through grassy habitats of the central United States. Their diet is not well known, but includes insects, as well as spiders, small crustaceans, and seeds. Unusually for shorebirds, males display in leks to attract mates. After mating, females leave to build nests, digging shallow depressions in the ground and lining them with leaves. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest soon after hatching, and are tended only by the females.
