Buffalo Ranked #7 in Best Easter Celebration

In two weeks Buffalo has managed to reach the top 10 list in two studies done by Wallethub, last week in best St. Paddy’s Day celebration and this week in best Easter celebration. Considering Buffalo is not even one of the top 50 most populous cities these studies show that Buffalo knows how to celebrate. Buffalo tied for first place as having the most candy stores and chocolate shops per capita in the nation which helped it propel up in the ranks.

Yet, there are some potential flaws to the study. First is that Buffalo ranked 95th for Easter weather, which clearly dragged Buffalo from an even higher ranking, but was ranked 17th for St. Patrick’s Day weather, which is held earlier in the Spring when it is usually much colder. Why the huge disparity between the two weather ranking? Another complaint brought up by the Buffalo News was that the rankings didn’t take into account all of the very traditional Easter destinations, foods, and events that are almost exclusively offered in Buffalo including the Broadway Market, the Butter Lamb, and Dyngus Day.

10 Cities That Are About To Be Famous... Again

Buffalo, along with other famous “rust belt” cities such as Pittsburgh and Detroit, have been placed among the ranks of other international cities that are finding a comeback. These places include Liverpool, England, Seoul, South Korea, Melbourne, Australia, and neighboring Hamilton, Ontario. Buffalo’s renovated historic architecture and more eclectic food options are two reasons the Queen City made the list.

Buffalo is starting to lure out-of-town money for real estate development

Evidence of Buffalo’s turnaround comes not only from development, but development led by outside investors bringing new money into the city. The Buffalo News has taken a look at how much of Buffalo’s $5.5B of investment over the last three years has come from outside sources. The News estimates about $350M (about 6%) of Buffalo’s total investment is coming from outsiders.

The News says outside investors are wary to play in an “insiders game” but does note more interest from outside investors seems to be accumulating with Buffalo’s progress. Anthony Ceroy, an Indianapolis investor whose business is revamping the old A&P Warehouse for $39M states:

“Buffalo’s a great place to do what we do. It’s a place that hasn’t had a tremendous amount of development for quite some time.... People are asking more about Buffalo than I’ve ever been asked. You’re going to have more attention in the future. You certainly have our attention.”

New boom of downtown residents helps Buffalo’s revitalization

It wasn’t that long ago that downtown Buffalo was not a desirable destination with a flurry of abandoned buildings and an empty pedestrian mall that ran down Main Street. Today, the city core might be the second most talked-about change in Buffalo after Canalside. Central to all of Buffalo’s popular destinations downtown is now at 97% occupancy with a slew of new businesses and renovated buildings.

These improvements drew residents downtown creating a bit of a housing boom. Currently the residences available in Buffalo is growing to nearly 6 times greater the level available before 2000. Many of the new residential buildings are restored historic buildings that were made possible by the historic tax credits. Many of Buffalo’s most historic architectural attractions were saved and re-purposed for a more attractive city center.

Foreign reporters are told of how Buffalo welcomes newcomers

Last week foreign journalists from across the globe assigned to New York City and Washington D.C. went on a day-trip to Buffalo sponsored by the U.S. State Department and spent some time interviewing Mayor Byron Brown. The reporters were primarily focused on Buffalo’s positive reputation for welcoming refugees and immigrants as the foreign-born population of Buffalo has nearly doubled to 24,000 since 2006.

Already a border city with Canada Buffalo stands to gain a lot by continuing to welcome immigrants setting itself apart as an international destination to live as well as visit. Immigration is part of the reason Buffalo has seen a decrease in its segregation levels in recent years. Mayor Brown praised the new energy, food, and culture that immigrants bring and set himself apart from leaders of other cities who are closing their doors to immigrants stating, “I am not fearful of being a welcoming city.”

Buffalo is back!

Buffalo has now been featured as part of Yahoo! News’ Cities Rising - Rebuilding America series, hosted by Katie Couric. So what makes Buffalo a city on the rise? Featured in the video is: the new energy and pride from the friendly people of the city; new businesses including the world’s leading startup competition - 43 North; helping immigrants and refugees resettle and start businesses through microloans like the West Side Bazaar; the development of modern day job skills; revitalized neighborhoods like the West Side, Larkinville, and Canalside; millennials moving in; and restored historic architecture.

Year in Review 2015: WNY could be new gateway for international cargo bound for U.S., Canada markets

Buffalo Business First is recalling some of its biggest stories of 2015 including this one regarding the potential increase of international cargo being warehoused in Buffalo. Next year, the Panama Canal will be able to handle a cargo capacity three times greater than its current load which is going to cause a capacity crisis in the Atlantic ports of New York and New Jersey who cannot expand. One option is to drop it off and immediately ship it to Buffalo by rail, as the city is connected to four of the seven major rail lines.

In addition, Buffalo is the second busiest inland port in the United States processing more than 1.7 million transactions, behind only Detroit and ahead of Los Angeles and Chicago. Southern Ontario, including Toronto, is the fourth most populous region in North America and Buffalo is the closest American city to support their needs. James Manno, board president of the International Trade Gateway Organization, says Buffalo has plenty of warehouse space, “If Buffalo were to begin receiving more shipments tomorrow, we'd be ready."
