Celebrating the Fifth of July

After the dust of the fireworks settles in, after a night of what sounds like the lit fuse of a cannon, what some might interpret as the cry of freedom, there is the next day.  To celebrate the declaration of independence from tyranny requires work for the next day.  A fight for freedom, in this world, is an ongoing fight.  But is the fight just a fight of governments and guns?

The war for freedom is an ongoing fight because it starts within the heart.  The greatest enemy is not the monarch across the sea, but the tyrant within.  The great lie that is being told over and over again is that we are a law unto ourselves, and if the monarch across the sea gets in the way of that, then we must fight for freedom.  But are we free from our own royal robes?  Are we free from our own tyranny?  Have we declared our independence from our own nature? 

This needs to be asked because like it or not, there is not all that much of a difference between the heart of the monarch across the sea and our own hearts.  We need to be freed from both.  We need to declare independence from both kinds of royalty – for both kinds of royalty have a yoke that is too hard to bear. 

But then there is that other King, and that King’s Kingdom is not like the kingdoms of this world.  He is a King that we can cast our cares upon, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light.  He is a King that we don’t need to fight against for our freedom – for he fought the war for us.  He fought the revolutionary war of the heart, and He will continue to fight it for us, against all other “royalty” – even ourselves.

A fight for freedom, in this world, is an ongoing fight.  But let your heart be at rest, for Jesus the King will fight your revolution for you, even against the tyranny within your own heart.  Now that is something to enter in and cling to, and that is something to celebrate!
