Buffy Summers in Every Episode (1/144)
↳Welcome to the Hellmouth
It's my first day. I was afraid that I was gonna be behind on all my classes, that I wouldn't make any friends, that I would have last month's hair. I didn't think there'd be vampires on campus.
Okay but I don't feel like the characters in Buffy get enough credit for all the shit they've dealt with while still being basically amazing for each other. Buffy created real people within a fantastical world and the characters are just so easy to fall in love with. The show is just so easy to fall in love with.
Cw; survivor’s guilt, flashback and self destructive behaviour also Lasko hardcore pining after Buffy.
Buffy isn’t a woman who really talked about her emotions, it’s a family thing. Hell, Lucy talked about her emotions more and Lucy’s favourite word is ‘huh.’
She’d rather take out her feelings on her drum set, as silly as it might sound. Buffy held her drumsticks so hard her hand trembled slightly as she played rather violently.
Buffy’s mind was clouded from the memories, each pound of the drum made her remember each pound of her paws hitting the floor and she ran across the field.
They closed their eyes, hoping to stop seeing them, the shades, the bodies and watching the shade rack it’s claws across Damien’s chest but it didn’t.
She could still feel the pain of her aching legs as she ran, her mind reaching out for any other wolf. David’s voice screaming in her head when she was in range.
All of those memories crashed through her mind in a mess of drum beats as Buffy let out a quiet growl and her playing got faster and louder.
Buffy could remember the shades claws digging into her flesh so vividly that when her shoulder stung with pain and something warm began to spread across her clothes, she didn’t even question it.
Buffy!
Damien’s voice echoed in her skull, his voice distorted and far away.
Buffy, move! Get out of here.
David’s voice was closer then Damien, being in her mind but still it distorted and Buffy winced when hearing it again.
Buffy-
Her sibling’s panicked call and the memories of Darlin’s frantic expression as they pulled Buffy into a wince-like hug.
Buffy. Please be careful!
Sam’s southern accent was more faded but it still ran though her mind as she failed to drown it out with her rapid playing and the pounding drums.
Buffy.
She didn’t know who’s voice it was anymore, “Stop.” She whispered under her breath.
Buffy.
“Shut up.” She hissed through gritted teeth while she kept her eyes closed so Buffy was unaware of the person trying to get her attention until-
“Buffy!” Lasko’s voice sliced through everything else, one of his hands resting on her shoulder. Buffy jolted and opened her eyes. Greeted by Lasko’s worried- almost terrified expression.
“Lasko?” She asked, all the cloudy memories slipping out of her mind but the pain was still there. Buffy winced and looked at the shoulder Lasko wasn’t touching.
Red blood was soaking her shirt, shit- she must’ve reopened a wound again. Buffy cursed under her breath and raised a hand to her bleeding shoulder. Moving her shirt to look at it.
“Hey- A-Are you ok?” He asked while Buffy tossed her drumsticks aside, not daring to look at Lasko again. Afraid to meet with that expression again.
“Fine- just got carried away.” Buffy muttered while trying to remember where her first aid kit was, she heard Lasko say her name again before a hand gently cupped her face.
His thumb brushed away tears she didn’t realise she cried, she seemed a little shocked at first just staring at him.
———
Oh shit. Lasko didn’t mean to touch her face without asking, he gulped and almost pulled back straight away. It’s just- Lasko had been worried about her.
After the inversion, Buffy hadn’t talked to anyone at all which he understood. She needed time with her family to recover but when Milo (who Lasko had kept in contact with) told him that Buffy hadn’t really spoken to the pack either Lasko wanted to stop by to check on her.
Worried he was just being overbearing on account of his own feelings but Lasko’s worried feeling was confirmed when seeing her.
Still with bruises all over her body, bandages wrapped around her arms and- why hadn’t she gone to a healer? Buffy was playing away which wasn’t usual, but Lasko couldn’t get her attention.
He waved to catch her attention but her eyes were closed, he called out for her but the playing was too loud then he noticed the blood pooling on her shoulder so he decided to reach out.
Then he saw the tears. Lakso’s heart dropped in his chest and before he knew it, he’d reached his hand out and cupped her face.
“O-Oh I’m sorry-“ he muttered about to pull away but Buffy leaned her face into his hand. Closing her eyes again and letting out a shuddering breath.
“No.” She whispered, “I’m not ok.”
Lasko’s eyes flicked to her shoulder again, still brushing his thumb along her cheek, she was warm. Radiating heat. Was that a shifter thing?
“I- I can heal that I-If you want. I took some healing classes and I’m p-pretty good, nothing special but I c-can,” Lasko trailed on while Buffy slowly opened her eyes and glanced back at him. Her eyes were wet with tears but look so bright and- fuck were her eyes always that pretty?
“You don’t need to.” She reached her hand up and gently placed it over the back of Lasko’s hand, Buffy leaned into him like she’d been missing touch. Hell, she might have.
“But I w-want to.” Lasko leaned forward slightly without even realising, god his heart hurt seeing Buffy like this. She was so loud and confident, an overwhelming force of light that Lasko adored bathing in but seeing her so full broke his heart.
“I don’t deserve it.” Buffy bit back a sob, her shoulder shuddering slightly, Lasko winced when she added, “I don’t deserve to be here.”
Lasko wanted nothing but to hold her. How could she think that?
“They worked so hard to protect everyone.” Buffy nuzzled her face into his hand, “while I couldn’t save anyone.”
Damien nor Huxley had said much about what happened inside the wards, Buffy had been the first to even mention anything - well except for one thing. Lasko raised his other hand and brushed her loose hair from her face, cupping her face with both hands.
Feeling a little confident are we?
“Damien said you s-saved him.” Lasko's words seemed to cause Buffy to jolt and remember something, wincing ever so slightly. “He said y-you took a shade attack for h-him.”
Lasko himself winced at the thought, hating to imagine either of them in danger.
“He still got hurt.” Buffy murmured, Lasko noticed the batch of blood again. She didn’t want him to heal her- is she punishing herself? Oh Buffy.
“But he’s alive.” Buffy finally looked back to Lasko, as he spoke, “you’re b-both alive and -fuck I’m not g-good at this- all that matters.”
Buffy chuckled slightly and let out a sigh. Nodding her head and smiling ever so gently.
“C-Can I heal you now?” Lasko kept his tone shushed while looking at her wound, Buffy pulled away from his hand and stood up straight.
Buffy hate is such a sore point with me. And it has always been there. Sometimes it can be unconscious misogyny, sometimes it is more of an idea that everything not perfectly aligned with the correct set of values is problematic, and therefore bad. Sometimes it is the curse of the protagonist, where people would consider a good guy who only does good deed to be boring, or a Mary Sue, but the moment the protagonist does something less wholesome, they got the hate, sometimes it is the feeling that the only possible trajectory of character development (or the development of the relationships) is upward, and the failure punished, is and the price of a step in a wrong direction is hatred.
And it is not about liking other characters more – or identifying with other characters more, or simply not liking Buffy. It is most definitely not about criticism – Buffy the girl, and of course the show itself, deserves criticism on many accounts. It is more of the concept “Buffy is actually the villain there”, or turning any Buffy’s action into a horrible crime, and seeing everything Buffy did and said in the worst possible light that make me shiver and wonder – why were you watching the show, again?
Buffy is not saintly or always right. But it is her story. It is not a story of her fall, it is a story of her growing up, making mistakes, facing their consequences, trying again and again to do right, to do better, to do the right thing. Or simply live, which is the right thing by itself, and it doesn’t always require slaying demons, but talking to friends and loved ones, going on despite being miserable, facing failures and mistakes, forgiving yourself, and sometimes others, going to sleep with one ridiculous vampire (or two, we are not judging here), making a choice to be strong every day, while not being afraid to ask for support. And that is why, despite outdated in many ways, Buffy is and always be relevant for me.
