Miss Beatrix Keeper and The Bees

The Bees consists of two classes of creature: the smaller worker units voyage out to gather pollen and nectar and other resources before returning to the hive-mother, a queen-of-queens which serves both as both protector and home. Such a large creature could not possibly hope to fly normally - particularly with such small wings - so not only is the hive-mother mostly hollow (providing space for the workers to live and rest) but it is also very warm and filled with helium, making the entire creature lighter than air and able to float, blimp-like. 

Being also too large to sustain itself through normal means, the hive-mother draws energy from a nuclear alpha-radiation source. The emitted alpha particles, relieved of their kinetic energy, collect electrons from the hive-mother’s body, becoming helium atoms which keep the gas mixture topped up (as some is always lost whenever a worker unit exits the hive).

Though it may look like honey, the viscous amber liquid which oozes from between the hive-mother’s segments is not recommended for human consumption.
