Day 5: Witchcraft journey?

Today, I felt a natural inclination to do protection work. Not because anything necessarily felt wrong in the moment but because I've realized that magic isn't only about responding. It's also about getting ready, safeguarding, and protecting the energy we've laboured so diligently to build. I wanted to centre myself and take ownership of my space as holy, and the tool I reached for? Something really, really simple and really, really underutilized: salt.

Salt has been utilized throughout cultures for centuries as a protection against negative energy and a means of cleansing environments. It's an emblem of the Earth element—grounding, cleansing, stabilizing. There's strength in its simplicity, particularly when combined with intention. I began by establishing a peaceful environment in my bedroom. I turned off most of the lights, lit a tiny white candle, and cradled a pinch of sea salt in my hand. As I focused, I pictured a safeguarding glow encasing me softly as a veil of gentle light. I proceeded to my window and door. my house's energetic portals and poured the salt slowly along the entrances. As I did so, I whispered softly a spell I had composed for the occasion: "With this salt, I draw the line. No harm may cross, no ill may bind.". This house is consecrated; this place is mine. So, mote it be, sealed by intent."

As soon as I'd done it, I took a deep breath and sensed that something had altered. Not dramatic—but there was absolutely no doubt that it had. The energy was lighter, and I felt more connected emotionally. I didn't feel scared or tense I felt strong. It was as if I'd re-drawn the line of where I stop and the world starts. I knew that protection magics wasn't about keeping everything out. It was about respecting your space, your energy, and your right to be in peace. There is magic in taking that back quietly.

Something I'm discovering as I dive further into my practice is that witchcraft can be powerful without being complicated or pretty. Even the most mundane objects—such as salt—are made sacred when you do something with them. The magick is in the intention. And today, my intention was clear: I guard my energy. I maintain my peace. This space belongs to me.

As we approach the peak of spring, it's time to celebrate the beauty and fertility of the season. Beltane is the perfect time to connect with nature, honor the earth, and indulge in some whimsical fun. Here are some correspondences and ideas for how to celebrate:

Green, pink, white, yellow, red.

Fertility, love, creativity, abundance, growth.

Lavender, dandelion, chamomile, lilac.

🍞 Foods

Honey cake, fresh salads, fruit and nuts, homemade bread.

🥂 How to celebrate

Dance around the maypole, have a picnic in nature, decorate with flowers, create a Beltane altar, light a bonfire, make love, practice divination.

Remember, Beltane is a time of joy, abundance, and growth. Embrace the season and connect with the earth. Happy Beltane! 🌸🌿🔥

Eurocentric Standards & Racist Criticisms of Magic

Alright yall. So I know it’s not just me, we’ve all seen a lot of back and forth on our dashes lately about a number of different topics such as...

What “counts” as real witchcraft, spells, magick, or magic vs. “wishing” or beginner nonsense?

How do we personally define multidimensional terms like “religion,” “intent,” and “witchcraft”?

How do these and other terms pertain to what we do as witches, chaotes, and/or magic(k) practitioners?

Who can use which terms and in what ways such as “sigils” and “spells” for certain activities?

There’s a lot of conflicting answers to those questions in our community. It’s important because the answers can have very big implications for how we view and treat each other. People are entitled to their own opinions and personal beliefs about definitions, techniques, and methodology, but I want to address the specifically racist, Eurocentric bullshit that underlies some of what I’ve seen in discussions about these topics.

Telling us that you look down on our forms of traditional and indigenous magic (or don’t even consider it to be magic at all) just because our methodologies and our practices don’t conform to Eurocentric standards is racist.

It is racist to try to judge the magic methodology and practices of non-Eurocentric magic traditions by Eurocentric standards. And if you’re not part of and well studied in a magic tradition, I’m not sure what right you have to judge it even by its own standards either. In other words...

If you aren’t an initiated bruja, don’t presume to judge the methodology or technique quality of an initiated bruja.

If you aren’t a rootworker or hoodoo doctor, don’t be comparing what we do to chaos magick or any other tradition in terms of standards or effectiveness.

These are just concrete examples, but this goes for any non-Eurocentric magic tradition and honestly, probably also for any magic tradition in general because

if you don’t practice it and you aren’t well versed in it, how do you expect to make a reasonable critique of it?

On a more personal note, I do not study or practice traditional European or American witchcraft, chaos magick, ceremonial magic, or any other Western magic tradition. I don’t practice witchcraft either, which is not inherently “European” necessarily - I understand that people from all different cultures and backgrounds refer to their craft as witchcraft and I support that. In the way that witchcraft is a very diverse and inclusive term, it has become a global concept and at all not one that refers only to European traditions. 

But it’s true that “witch” and “witchcraft” are English words, not the indigenous terms for what I do, and they are terms that don’t feel to me personally like they represent or embody anything in my craft, especially given their connotations in the cultural context of Africana traditions.

So it does not make sense to judge or scrutinize any of my techniques or what I do by the standards of chaos magick, witchcraft, or any other tradition that I do not practice or study at all.

I am a rootworker and Iyami Aje, and I don’t conform to Eurocentric standards of magick on purpose.

From one lazy Witch, to all the others ❤️

Hello fellow Witches and friends!

I’m fairly new to the community, and I did something that really helps me, so I wanted to share it with you guys.

I’m incredibly lazy and forgetful but also a busy Witch, and I was given a little Mo-Jo bag on a necklace by a lovely Witch who owns a great little shop near me. In the bag were rocks & crystals that help rid negative energy, and I thought, ‘I could do with a few different ones of these’

As I had plenty of bags and crystals, but not much room, I set this up!

1. A collection of bags with tags & little lists in them of what crystals will help with their particular subject.

Here’s what I’ve got made so far:

“Pls help me make a choice”

“Communication”

“Open my 3rd eye”

“Anti-sads please”

“I ❤️ me”

“Safe travel“

“No thank u back pain”

“Be-gone social spooks”

“Piss-off negative energy”

I take the crystals I need, put the list in my crystal box, so when I put them back, I put the list back in the bag & I also know if I’ve lost a crystal.

The bag goes in my necklace and I can hide it under my shirt so it’s not noticeable.

And once I’ve finished, I put the bags back in their pencil case I got from Typo 😁

Just wanted to share with you guys! Hope this helps some of you
