fic concept: the hardest of hearts
The offspring of a witch and a witchhunter, Jughead and Jellybean Jones are what’s known as mufflers. Not quite magic, but not quite mundane, mufflers do just what their name implies: muffle the magic around them. The Jones family lives in the smallest house on Elm Street, just across the way from the infamous Cooper family.
The Coopers are a powerful family of fullblood witches. Alice Cooper, the matriarch, manipulates the actions and emotions of others and her husband, Hal Cooper, works with potions, poisons, and other such substances. Charles Cooper and Pollyanna Cooper, their oldest and middle children, take after their parents. Then there was Elizabeth Cooper. Betty, the baby of the family, was different. Betty was an empath. Where her mother could control others’ emotions, Betty felt them as if they were her own. Every time her mother’s voice rises in anger, or her father’s lowers in frustration, their thoughts and feelings rip through her. The Cooper family’s secret turmoil is slowly but surely tearing her apart.
Then, one quiet summer day, FP Jones slams the front door of his house, and the flare of emotion from Gladys Jones is strong enough for Betty to feel, even with the Jones children muffling Gladys’ powers. The sheer despair and anger Betty feels from the young mother leaves her breathless, and she’s knocking on the Jones’ front door before FP has made it all the way down the street on his motorcycle.
