Bui Vien was officially the name of this road from October 6, 1955. Bao Dai, it was called Voice Protection. Before that, it was a trail of a village called Tan Hoa. Bùi Viện

Bui Vien, also known as Backpacker Street. It’s a very polarizing part of town. Some people love it, some people absolutely cannot stand it. Imagine if you were to take Sunset Strip in the 1980s, mixed with Las Vegas Blvd, Beale Street, and mixed in lawlessness, hookers, pickpockets, street performers (children blowing fire in the middle of the street), local Vietnamese mixed with backpackers and curious tourists both young and old, and you will start to get an idea of what this street is all about. 

- This photo is from one of my first visits to Bui Vien, first of many. I don’t come down to BV often, but every once in a while you want to have a drink past 11pm, this is pretty much your only option. It can be a lot of fun, but you gotta keep a check on your wallet and phone, cause they can be gone in a snap.
