Construction Junction

   Construction Junction provides deconstruction services primarily to private home owners and developers throughout Western Pennsylvania.  Through its reconstruction business and donations, Construction Junction creates a local market for UBMs.  It sells approximately 100 tons of used building materials annually from its 50,000- square foot warehouse in Point Breeze, Pittsburgh.   In 2004, the reuse center recorded sales of $631,000, covering 98% of its operating expenses and a total of over $5 million since it opened in 1999.   

  The deconstruction projects it receive is primarily from renovation projects which involve soft-stripping, rather than building removal.  While neither the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have provided funding to Construction Junction, helping the organization gain access to buildings that have been condemned or slated for demolition. The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh gave Construction Junction a $5000 grant to offset the cost of a “deep salvage” on a project,  a deconstruction practice that reclaims stone, brick, and other materials before the building was demolished.  

The company has handled projects outside of Allegheny County, including a soft-stripping of campus building at Slippery Rock University in Butler County.  It takes on large projects, such as the removal of equipment and building materials from the former Aliquippa Community Hospital, and smaller ones, such as soft stripping of single family homes donated to the Mon Valley Initiative for removal.
