Although the organisation had helped out in several other disaster recovery ways, at the time we were there their projects all involved building or restoring schools in the area. The Prithvi School project is the one we were involved with and that’s the one you can see in all the pictures. The school was to consist of 2 buildings - 4 classrooms each. The one building you can see in the second picture was already a lot further along than the one on which you can see us ‘tying rebar’.
The day would typically start with us taking the bus to site and then having a meeting to discuss what would need to happen that day and who would be doing what. Dawid and I both did various jobs on site ranging from sifting sand, to excavation, to assembling scaffolding, to breaking down structures, clean up, tying rebar, and more.
After returning post-Tihar break we even got to partake in a cement pour. This is a big deal! Whenever a school had a pour day volunteers from other sites would come and help out. The day would start earlier and the work would be nonstop until the job was finished. There were various stations and I spent most of the day either bringing buckets of gravel, sand, or cement to the mixer ..where it would then be thrown in, mixed, and brought up to pour the first floor roof. The whole process was high energy and somehow the pour we participated in was completed in record time! We were all happy when it was done, that we got to wash the cement from our skin and relax for the rest of the day.
Even during our 2 short weeks there we saw a lot of progress and it was really great to see everyone find work even those without prior experience working in construction. We did find that not everything was done in the most efficient way, however it was super easy to get involved and feel like you were helping move the project along. (:
