International Day of Peace
Let’s build a world: “A world where compassion and empathy overcome suspicion and hatred. A world that we can truly be proud of.” – UN
In just a few of the wise words from Leymah Gbowee, “Building peace in a war-making world, your duty is not to change people, it is to walk alongside them.” As of yesterday, I’m a proud graduate of @au_sis. I could not have gotten here without the amazing support of my family, friends, coworkers, and communities. We are not here alone, but with all of our loved ones. I am so incredibly privileged to have had this opportunity at this institution to pursue my passion, meet people who share the same vision of a more peaceful, more equal, more just world and to learn all I can about all the things that set my soul on fire. Thank you to everyone who has supported me during the past two years and my life leading up to this moment. I am so incredibly grateful. #moretocome #2018augrad #mastersininternationaldevelopment #wagepeace #buildpeace #onwards
Heartless
How heartless are we? How heartless to deny life. We condemn the innocent. We condemn them, To die, To drown, To paint the sandy walls red. We watch passively. Their tongues turn to sand, And their tears run blood. Their stomachs wilt, And their souls dull. Forget liberty or happiness. We’ve denied life. Deny life, Thus deny liberty, Thus deny happiness. Mothers weep And children fade. Whispered prayers escape broken lips. But watch out and close the gates! Lock them tight! Because here they come: The tired, the poor, The huddled masses yearning to breathe free. These are those “wretched” refugees. And so we turn our cheek, Avert our eyes, And lock our gates. How heartless are we? How heartless to deny them life. We condemn these innocents. We condemn them, To die, To drown, To paint the sandy walls red. We are So Heartless.

1 Month Until Peace Day!
There’s only 1 month until Peace Day (Sign-up today!) and in anticipation we’d like to share some of the Peace Day plans we already know about!
Smith Mountain Lake Community Church of the Brethren (Wirtz, VA) will be making wooden doves for an art installation that will raise awareness about peace issues around their church
Northwest Suburban Peace & Education Project (Mt. Prospect, IL) will be at several high schools on and around Peace Day and is planning to talk to the students about how they can promote peace.
Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren (Littleton, CO) is hosting a Peace Fest that will feature outdoor worship, face painting, and a cookout for their neighborhood.
Igreja da Irmandade (Sao Paolo, Brazil) is holding a special worship service to celebrate those who have worked and still work for peace in their community.
The United Church of Christ, OC Inc. has organized a media violence fast which encourages people to choose peace by abstaining from violent movies, television, and video games during the week surrounding Peace Day.
This is just a small snapshot of the kinds of events that are in the works, and we’d love to add your Peace Day event to the list.

On Earth Peace Joins Call to hold America Accountable for War Crimes
On Earth Peace has signed on as an organizations sponsor to RootsAction campaign to hold the United States of America accountable for war crimes and military aggression. “Since the end of the Cold War,” RootsAction writes in their campaign announcement, “the United States of America has systematically violated the prohibition against the threat or use of force contained in the UN Charter and the Kellogg Briand Pact.” International law prohibits nations from using unsanctioned military force. Domestically, the US Constitution requires the President to seek congressional approval before engaging the United States military in foreign conflict, a policy clarified by the War Powers Act, which limits presidential war powers. For decades, US presidents have used military force with total impunity towards international accords and Constitutional limits. Because of the United States’ influence in the United Nations and supersized military, the United States uses unilateral military aggression without limit or fear of consequences. The United States must be held accountable for using unchecked military force and committing war crimes. On Earth Peace is joining RootsAction in calling for international pressure to curb American war crimes and military aggression. We invite you to join us!
