Have you come across a situation where you are successfully able to eliminate 3 out 5 options but fail to get the right option out of the two options left?

Well, you are not alone. Many candidates have the same issue.

So how about if I say you choose the option that you did not choose among the two. Let me put it this way, if your final answer between C and D option is “C”, then go ahead and mark “D” as your option, considering your history of choosing the wrong option always.

Well, I am just trying to help you here considering the history. The truth is – if you are stuck between 2 answer choices and get it wrong all the time, what it really means is that you are simply unable to identify what is wrong with the choice you picked. This is the underlying problem, and this is what you need to address.

I understand sentence correction is very tricky. Sometimes the one that seems the easy one is usually the tricky one.

Therefore, I have some tips for you which will help you tackle this section better.

1. Identify what SC concept is being tested.

2. Look for subject verb mismatches.

3. Don’t get confused by pronoun ambiguity.

4. Don’t eliminate answer choices based on idioms right in the beginning.

5. Don’t get misled by red herrings.

6. Treat options A,B,C,D,E equally.

7. Pick up clues from the non-underlined part of the sentence.

8. Answer choice A may not always get the meaning right.

9. Always substitute the choice in the original sentence.

10. Don’t go in with any blanket rules.

Every rule has exceptions! So do not eliminate any answer choice outright just because it contains ‘being’ or an ambiguous pronoun. Keep your options open and evaluate each of them.

Also, there are some things that you will find in the GMAT pattern that can help you take better decisions. For example, the GMAT prefers active voice over passive. It also prefers a concise statement over a wordy one. Also, scan the shortest of the answer choices for errors, if you are in doubt and then pick it if you don’t find any other etc. Use these to identify which answer choices you need to be wary about.

Lastly, if you are stuck between the last 2 answer options and have already spent 90 seconds, then pick an option using one of the thumb rules and move on.
