If you have never heard of “fracking” do not worry. Anyone who is not associated with the natural gas industry is not likely to know the slang. It is not a cuss word if that is what you are thinking! It is simply the mash up of the word “hydraulic fracturing”. We all know that there is such a thing called natural gas, and many people might even use it but we do not know how it comes to us. This is a process where bulk tanker plays quite the hero as it involves, transporting large amount of water, sand and chemicals to the gas site in the process of extracting the gas.

  The main concept of extracting natural gas from its parent rock is, in theory, a simple process. First, a deep well is drilled into the earth, as deep as 10,000 feet! This well is a lot narrower than the conventional well. Through this hole in the ground, water, sand and chemicals are injected at high pressures so that it causes the precious rock layer to crack. The sand in the mixture causes the fissures to remain open so that the entrapped gas can leave the rock freely and be collected in the tanks at ground level. From here the natural gas is piped into the market. In the meanwhile the excess water seeps back up and is collected in pits and from here they are carried off to treatment plans. And all this would be incomplete without bulk tankers!

  We have all seen cement tanker at some construction project or the other, but we do not appreciate the vital roles bulk tankers play in our lives, in general. Imagine the important task of carrying the millions of gallons of water and sand and chemicals to the site. If there were no bulk tankers we might have to contrive a much more complicated way to extract the gas. And not just this, there are thousands of ways in which they are enriching our lives each day, and yet they find no place in our prized wall of posters!
