The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has revised its regulatory guidance concerning driver records of duty status (RODS) generated by logging software programs on laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones. This technology will be allowed as of July 10 as long as it provides a means of capturing an electronic signature. (more...)

Truck Tonnage jumps in July, index nears record high

Diesel continues price slide, at 9-month low

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell another eight-tenths of a cent in the week ended Aug. 18, putting it at $3.835, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration. (more...)

Hours, brakes top out-of-service violations in this year’s Roadcheck inspection blitz

Of the 72,415 drivers inspected in this year’s Roadcheck inspection spree, 4.8 percent were placed out-of-service, and more than half of those were placed out-of-service due to hours of service or logbook violations. (more...)

Senate bill aims to promote natural gas adoption in long-haul trucking

The Senate this week introduced its version of a bill to cut natural gas-powered trucks a break, as it would give them an exemption to federal truck weight standards as a means to mitigate the weight of nat gas tanks and to prevent natural gas adopters from being at a competitive disadvantage. Data collected for the International Tank Container Organisation’s (ITCO’s) second Tank Container Fleet Survey shows that 12% more tank containers are in in operation this year than in 2013. Around 42,600 tank containers were manufactured in 2013, up from 39,700 in the previous year. (more...)

Friday's Rig: 1974 ‘Low Patrol’ Ford W9000

Have a good weekend, everybody!

Though the working rigs tend to dominate the headlines around Shell Rotella’s annual SuperRigs show, this year there was a firecracker of a truck at the top of the judges’ list in the show-truck category: the “Low Patrol” 1974 Ford W9000 cabover custom rig of “trucking’s biggest fan” Robb Mariani. Pictured above, Mariani bought the rig, with its original 290 Cummins and Rockwell 3:73 rear end (which remain today) and only 53,000 original miles, in 2004 from a car-lot owner in Smithville, Tenn., who himself had purchased it years earlier at an auction conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol years ago, where it’d served a long life but logged a very few 38,000 miles.
