They were sat at a small table in the middle of the busy dining room. Carson wished they got a booth or table to give them some semblance of privacy. At least, the long, starched white table cloth concealed their feet, which offered cover for Greta to playfully nudge Carson in a not entirely innocent manner.
"Evenin' ladies…" A waiter in a black waistcoat and bowtie appeared at their table, filling their water glasses from a stainless steel pitcher. "What brings you into our lovely establishment?"
"Two friends having enjoying a night out on the town," Greta smiled.
The words triggered Carson back into her surly stupor, hardly listening once again to as Greta effortlessly slipped into her well-rehearsed charm and elegance. As orders were taken -- some combination of steaks and sides and starters -- her leg bounced under the table, her cloth napkin twisting in her hands.
At some point, the waiter returned to fill their wine glasses. Carson hardly touched hers, wishing she had ordered something stiffer, her usual dirty martini; Greta downed two glasses before their salads arrived.
When Greta finished her salad -- while Carson hardly touched her bowl of soup, the pangs of hunger no match for the pangs of disappointment -- she let her silverware clatter pointedly onto the plate. Carson hardly flinched.
After another waiter cleared Greta's empty plate, Greta planted her elbows on the table and leaned forward.
"Time to cut the shit, Carson."
