artgallery.nsw.gov.au Yoon Kwang-cho’s vessel is inscribed with the Heart Sutra, a Buddhist text on nothingness. As a Zen practitioner, Yoon sees inscribing clay as an act of faith and meditation. He hand-builds ceramics, starting with coil construction, then beating and scouring slabs before covering them with a thin slip in which the text is scratched. His work is admired for its individuality and imaginative embrace of the refined aesthetic of Korea’s 15th and 16th-century blue-green buncheong ceramics.
