Misc: The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) The Twilight Zone is an American media franchise based on the anthology television series created by Rod Serling in which characters find themselves dealing with often disturbing or unusual events, an experience described as entering "The Twilight Zone". The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water (1973) Lonely Water, commissioned by the Central Office of Information, is a British PIF scripted by Christine Hemmon and directed by Jeff Grant. Since 1973, and for several years, it was aired in various children's programming as a response to concerning statistics on child mortality rates in drowning accidents across the UK.

It starts with a wide shot of a vast body of water littered with fallen trees and surrounded by ominous mist. Then, The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water (Donald Pleasence), a Grim Reaper-esque figure who floats over water and land alike, appears to warn children about the dangers of behaving foolishly around water, especially when one does not know how to swim. What accompanies its words are three scenes of kids plunging into the water while doing risky aquatic-related activities such as retrieving a football from a pond, fishing from a fragile branch, and going for a swim in a polluted lake. With the implication being that they drowned, and the spirit has come to reap their souls.

It is widely regarded as one of the most terrifying Public Information Films to ever exist, said to have traumatized an entire generation of children.

Corruption: The Fly (1986) Well, there's the obvious aspect of a man turning into a mutated fly-thing with insectile behaviors and thought processes (vomiting digestive enzymes onto food, climbing walls and ceilings, feral behaviors), but there's a lot of unhealthy love in here as well; the mutant fly wants a mate, and that means putting a woman through the same horrific transformation he's undergone. In the process, he exhibits terrible jealousy, possessiveness, lust, violence, and eventually attempting to fuse himself, his love interest, and their unborn child into a singular entity so they can be together forever.

Oh, and the body horror. Can't forget the ooey, gooey body horror.

Desolation: Martyrs (2008) Martyrs is a 2008 horror film written and directed by Pascal Laugier, starring Morjane Alaoui and Mylène Jampanoï. Due to its pervasive graphic violence and bleak themes, it's a heavily polarizing film often deemed one of the most disturbing of all time, and it's one of the most well-known films associated with the New French Extremity movement.

The story is about Lucie, a torture victim who escapes from her captors. She's sent to an orphanage where she meets and befriends Anna, a fellow child abuse victim. While the police and the media investigated Lucie's predicament, the perpetrators were never caught, so Anna pledges to help Lucie track them down. Fifteen years later, Lucie seizes the chance to have her revenge, and things spiral out of control from there.

The Desolation is the fear of pain and loss, and in my opinion this is most Desolation-coded movie I've know of. The cult behind the plot of the movie are even somewhat similar to the cult of the Lightless Flame: Just as the cult of the Lightless Flame's members are enriched by destroying the lives of people who have things to live for and destroying things before their potential is realised, the cult of torturers utterly destroy their victims (their "martyrs") both physically and psychologically to "transcend" them. And while the motive we are given for their actions is End-coded (They want to know what their victims see when they are on the boundary between life and death to know what the afterlife looks like), their M.O couldn't be more Desolation-aligned.
