How can a show have the most satisfying ending, but yet also have the least satisfying ending at the same time? But yet somehow White Collar does?
Learning that Neal was alive, learning how exactly Neal was able to do that through Peter’s point of view, seeing Peter imaging Neal in the office, the Burkes naming their kid Neal, Mozzie is still friends with the Burkes was all so satisfying
BUT WHERE WAS MY REUNION SCENE??????
Arms of Rhys ap Tewdwr (c. 1040 – 1093)

This week, we’re going from the almost-historically-grounded arms attributed to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd to the absolutely spurious arms attributed to Rhys ap Tewdwr and the House of Dinefwr. It is a pretty common attribution, but given that the power of Dinefwr and their realms of Deheubarth had faded considerably by the time heraldry started to gain traction in Wales, I’m somewhat skeptical that these arms have any basis in historical fact.
Anyway. Given that Rhys ap Tewdwr died in literally the eleventh century, we don’t have a whole lot of information about him. He was descended from Rhodri the Great via Cadell ap Rhodri and Hywel Dda. His last wife, Gwladys ferch Rhiwallon of Powys, had a daughter named Nest, whose descendants include the families of FitzGerald and de Barry. Unfortunately, Rhys’ death led to the breakup of his lands, with his heir Gruffydd ending up with some, and the Normans ending up with a whole lot more.

Arms of Ednowain ap Bradwen
“Lord of Llys-Bradwen, in Merioneth, Founder of the XV. Noble Tribe. Gu. three snakes, nowed, in a triangular knot, ar.”
The ostensible founder of the fifteenth and final noble tribe does actually seem to have been a real person! He was active around the mid-1100s, and may have been married twice (although the constant duplication of names in Welsh genealogy makes this… complicated). Darrell Wolcott at Ancient Wales Studies notes that “[w]e know of no singular achievement by Ednowain ap Bradwen which merited his inclusion among the 15 Founders of Noble Tribes.”

Arms of Hedd Molwynog
“Lord of Uwch Aled, Founder of the IX. Noble Tribe. Sa. a hart pass. ar. attired or.”
I have a little more confidence that Hedd existed, compared to some of the other individuals listed in the manuscript. It’s possible that he was the five-times-great-grandson of Rhodri Mawr, who conquered and ruled much of modern Wales. (It’s also possible that this descent was somewhat fabricated.) Most of the sources I’ve found refer to him as Hedd ap Alunog instead, and connect him to Llanfair Talhearn (a specific village) rather than Uwch Aled, which seems to have been a rural district in the same general area.
