I'm not usually one to make posts on Tumblr, but I wanna help spread awareness around here.
The Burn Book page is such an immature blog to even exist in the first place, because why are we tryna pull a Regina George?? Did yall forget what happens to her at the end of the movie?? Highschool bullshit like this?? In the big 2026??
The block button is literally right there if you don't like someone's fanfics and it is there for a reason so USE IT!!
Hate, death threats and negativity in general has become way too normalised online and I am genuinely so disappointed that it has reached Tumblr too. This fandom has been a safe space for me and it pains me to see blogs like these coming to light. I've already survived VTuber Twitter! I've had enough!
Please go report and block @/tojioffline, because they clearly don't know how to function in an online space.
I'm already making a video about how fucked up the VTubing space is. Don't make me make a video about you too.
Listen idk if anyone will care but seeing a lot of the discourse going around with big blogs vs smaller blogs and a lot of bigger blogs deactivating over the harassment and bullying—this is my honest take on a lot of popular talking points as someone who would likely be considered a "big blog"
disclaimer: I am not by any means a representative for every “big blog” or every writer but as I’ve been on here 2.5 years im just attempting to humanize things as I feel like its super easy to get in your own head about it all and that's when we start being parasocial, bitter and spiraling when things usually aren't that deep lmfao. Also this is mostly me yapping and thinking out loud lol being as honest as possible. I feel like a lot of this shit is obvious but sometimes it just needs to be said out loud. If this can help people get some perspective or diffuse any animosity, or get open conversation started so we can just talk openly and not behind anon, well then i'm glad his could help.
“Big blogs only reblog moots”
This is kinda the case for the most part. But I would say for me, mostly interacting with moots is something I primarily did since the start when I first made friends and had like 20 followers. However, I feel like the reason is a lot less nefarious for the majority than gatekeeping or being snobby—it’s convenience.
I spend 85% of my free-time writing rather than interacting (10%) or reading (5%).
Breast Pump Naoya 9.7k words (Revision History Add On from Google Docs)
It took me 17 days to write this so that averages a bit under 2.5hrs~ a day in addition to my regular life, friends and responsibilities and this is also while simultaneously writing other things lol.
Part 1 of Freddy Sukuna 8k words
This i wrote over 30+ days same average writing time but just more sessions. spread out.
I’m not saying this is EVERYONE as I consider myself a super duper slow ass writer but my adhd, neurospicy, medicated ass needs to edit shit like 4-5x before I feel okay posting lmfao. like i dont even let my beta readers see my first draft that shit reads like a middle school diary and needs to be worked over throughly fkjsdhfbkjshd.
But even when I do read, ngl, I reread my stuff more than I read anyone else. I believe every writer should be their own favorite writer if they are writing for themselves. Is that conceited? Idk maybe? I honestly never thought of it that way since all of my stories are literally maladaptive daydreams that come from my head. Being able to read it back to myself actually articulated just tickles something in my brain right, it’s like that feeling you get from watching ASMR videos lol, idk it just gives me delight lol. I write for myself so why wouldn't i enjoy it the most? lol.
Going back to the convenience factor—my closer moots I brainstorm with. They have brain stormed with me. Ofc I/we/they are going to prioritize reading stories we’ve already heard about, helped brainstorm and/or are already excited to read. Usually we will be tagged or they will give us a link directly. It’s a lot easier to read that then going to search for something.
Don't get me wrong I get the perception though, and I also understand why to others it would look like a huge exclusive circle jerk. It’s not like I only exclusively reblog moots, if I see a fic I like on the timeline or that someone has reblogged and I like it I will definitely reblog regardless if we are moots or I am following them. But it just doesn’t happen as much. There’s plenty moots fics too I have spoken with them about that I haven’t even had a chance to read yet either as you can see, I’m honestly mostly writing.
Not gonna lie with the amount of “When’s P2!?” Request I get its hard for me to even get into reading something by someone else without feeling guilty. Which is why I tend to binge read and spam reblogs of works after I publish a fic/part because then I feel the less guilt. Like yay I finished something now I can read something else. I always try to read the fic before I reblog it so I actually have something nice or insightful to say about the story.
Another thing to note is a bigger blog reblogging a smaller blog isn't automatically going to make people read it. Sure, maybe you might get a 100-200 note boost at most? But I feel like when people talk about notes and clout they want things in the thousands. A bigger blog reblogging you isn't going to make you big.
Why?
Because people followed the writer for them, not for you. There is no guarantee that they will like your story, that just because the bigger blog liked it all their followers will. All their followers don't even like every single thing a big blog writes (which is 100% normal and id think more common thats someone genuinely liking every single thing lol).
So while yes, people should reblog the things they like regardless of moots or followers, etc. people are more inclined to reblog their friends and there is zero guarantees your fic would blow up from it. So all of this "bigger writers don't support smaller writers" is a bit asinine to me. Unless you directly wanted a certain author's specific attention and feedback. If that is the case then asking nicely if they would be up for reading it and giving you feedback is your best bet. Also remember to say thank you as I have had someone ask me for feedback, me give a detailed response on what's working/what could be improved and they never even responded to say thank you lmfao.
Honestly too, there's a level of entitlement I feel like with all the complains about this. No one is entitled to a reblog, not even a big writer by their own followers.
People become "big writers" by consistently posting fics and engaging with the timeline not by getting boosted by other big writers. I post like maybe 2-3 stories a month and was able to grow to almost 25k over 2.5 years you don't even have to post a lot just be consistent. Ofc theres ppl who have gotten 50k in like a year who post 5-10x as much as me. The more you post, the more opportunities people have to see you and your work. But I'm proof you can post sporadically (and longer stories on average) and still get a following over time. Just be active on the timeline. I even took a 2-3 month break last year too, finishing up school, and still was able to grow.
“Big Blogs form exclusive cliques”
While there are definitely cliques, I don’t know necessarily if I would say they are exclusive as you think. People know people who know people and that's usually how a group chat or discord starts. People will be invited over time by whoever runs the chat or server. (Although I 100% think there is truth to discord being the cause of a lot of drama—it's because the more intimately you get to know someone the more they reveal who they are and not everyone is going to get along—although yes there are some huge cunts too lmfao).
In my experience writers are pretty open to people hopping in their inbox and chatting it up with them. Everyone who loves writing wants to talk about writing. If you want to ask me about headcanons or tell me yours or bounce ideas off of me I am super open to that. (Honestly I’d even be open to beta for people who are open to critical feedback)
@/jaibunni (hi bb i hope u dont mind me using u as an example) didn’t even have her account set up for writing when she slid in my dms and started yapping with me. and now next month i'm going to visit her on my way back from Peru :)
It’s literally all about approach.
However, if you are sliding in for clout or superficial reasons, are being too parasocial or fanned out, at least for me, its sets a weird tone. I don’t want to talk to a fan of me, I wanna talk to a fan of jjk that just happens to enjoy my writing if that makes sense. Just be yourself and don't be afraid to put yourself out there if what you really want is a friend group. Of course not everyone will be receptive, you can't force relationships nor expect it to happen overnight. But you will find your people and vibe a lot faster reaching out than not. Not everyone you don't click with is a bitch and hates you, sometimes ppl personalities don't mesh or they aren't looking for more or any connections at all and that's fine. Sure sometimes there are people who are just straight up bitches lmfao, I've met a few. But i think for the most part, at least in my experience, the contact would be welcomed.
Also important to consider here, that in being neurodivergent a lot of people (me) would never slide into a dm to chat as they think they would be a bother. I'm like 110% okay and encourage people bothering me at any point and time but it makes we wanna throw up with anxiety messaging someone first cause what if they are like "why is this bitch talking to me rn fjbhsdjkhsbdf" istg i feel that way im not lying. 😭😭 That's why im just happy to talk to whoever wants to talk to me lmfao. i feel like most people are social awkward reaching out to others too, rather than stuck up.
"Big Blogs are so fake positive with each other"
Mmm yes and no. The flirting, jokes and overt positivity I think is less about being fake and more about trying to spread positivity amongst each other. It be so easy to just compete with each other, some characters too have really passion fans and it can feel like when you see people make comments like "omg ur the best xyz writer! this is the best fanfic ive read!" that could make another writer feel bad, so keeping positive flirting with each other takes that imaginary competition out of it and can help dissolve tensions before they even start.
Plus, as someone who is spiritual and wholly believes in energy and positive and negative vibes—thinking positive even when you don't feel positive, keeping at it despite feeling down, discouraged, etc, will eventually shape your thoughts and actions positively for real. If you think ppl don't like you, ignoring you or your fics, etc, etc, then that is ultimately what you will manifest as true. If you think of yourself as a growing blog who is on their own journey, that's what you will be. A lot of emotions we have would change if our perspective was more positive and I 100% believe that. If you want to be the victim, you are going to be the victim, it's a self fulfilling prophecy.
I have to say even from my own experience 90% of the tumblr drama stems from nerds miscommunicating with each other, hurt feelings over imagined slights and people going for the olympic gold at jumping to conclusions.
Sure, that 10% exists you will encounter some straight bitches or people who are full of themselves, etc, etc. But I keep seeing if people would get out of their feelings and just approach the person, ask them or try to listen to get their perspective, they would not even be fighting.
Y'all wanna know some tea? (its old tea if you've been on my blog but relevant to this you can skip if you dont gaf)
when I first started there was this other blog who I was like besties with, she was my first real friend and we talked like every single day, even texted. We started a discord together. We were adding bots and I told her I wanted to add mudae (iykyk) but i know it can trigger ppl so I dont want anyone to fight.
Her fatal words? "oh its just pixels, no one will fight over pixels." (😭😭😭😭). So I added it and she paid for server premium.
Long story short she got mad cause she rolled Gojo and someone else asked if they could trade her and she didn't want to be mean so she said yes if you can get Levi. Then she proceeded to spend the next week in my dms saying she regrets saying she would trade Gojo and me saying 10x over "girl I promise it isnt that deep., just tell her you dont wanna trade" but she didn't want to "go back on her word." So Levi was finally rolled and she traded. Tell me why after she became the most passive aggressive person for the next 3 weeks? She claimed she was busy with work and couldn't talk as much. Took Sukuna from someone else (not the person who she traded) when she didn't even like Sukuna and openly hated on him before. Then proceeded to make a fanfic about Sukuna, that no one asked for, that was lore inaccurate despite an episode just airing a week ago that explained the lore—all to prove that she now liked him fhbsdhfjbsd(again no one asked her for this). Even lying that mudae server premium expired when she just transferred over to player premium to play in her bf's server with all guys who only collected girls so she could have all the anime guys LOL.
After those 3 weeks she deleted her tumblr and blocked everyone on discord, including me, and disappeared without even talking to me about it. (im not twisting it i still have ss lmfao).
While the bigger moral of this story is don't play mudae if you wanna keep friends (lol)... the other part of it is if she had just had the "tough" (😭plzzzzz its pixels) conversation about not wanting to make the deal anymore, she wouldn't have had to crash out and there wouldn't have been any drama lmfao.
But the takeaway here is, not everyone's personality or humor is going to land the same way for everyone that doesn't mean they deserve negativity over it. You can just not like someone for whatever reason without making it everyone else's problem.
I have a few ppl I don't fuck with because I know they are problematic but that doesn't mean the timeline has to know. That doesn't mean we can't peacefully co-exist in our own spaces apart of the larger community.
So are we all irl scissoring sister besties who are the closest ever? No, lmfao. Lots of times the interaction stays on the timeline and we don't even dm/talk much outside of those interactions. But it is important we show outward positivity.
If anyone is threatened by positivity being shown then they really need to take a deep look at themselves to see where and why they are so hurt. I feel like it's less hurt and more like they feel left out tbh but just join in.
“Bigger blogs saying notes aren’t important are full of shit”
I feel like it's said over and over again by bigger blogs who have been around because the hard truth of the matter is if you only care about notes you are not going to have a good time on this app...at all lmfao.
You are not going to survive as a writer.
Because as we all know notes aren’t always reflective of quality or effort. Someone could have 10k words of the best gut wrenching heart stopping fic and get 2k notes and someone writing a similar trope stripped down to the smut only will have less than 1k words and get 20k notes.
It’s too easy to get caught up in comparisons and being consumed with tracking notes. That’s also another reason I spend more of my time writing and not too much reading others stories or in tags because it's just human nature to compare. If you are more focused on what you are doing then what others are doing won’t matter as much.
Also, in more of my fufu spirituality rhetoric the best way to manifest more out of life/the universe is gratitude. A scarcity mindset breeds scarcity. If you constantly think you are never getting enough notes, it's literally never going to be enough. Even if you did get something unseen crazy revolutionary like a 80k note fic, it wouldn't satisfy you.
That isn't to say if you consistently only get 100 notes or less be happy and don't try to get more. It means focus on YOU as to why you aren't getting them. Is it layout? tags? grammar? sentence structure? plot holes? opening hook? readability in terms of stark colors or tiny fonts? how can you improve? what's not connecting with your audience? you can still have gratitude and use those 100 notes as a benchmark for your own improvement. That way when you do make "big numbers" it will feel earned based on your own merits and you can see how far you came.
Honestly, what I tend to focus on more than anything is the comment to like ratio. I could have 15k likes, if only 5 people comment, I’m going to feel like a flop lmfao. I want feedback and commentary way more than a high note number.
NGL, if I had 200 comments and like 2 likes I’d be more proud of that then a 20k+ note fic with like 20 comments. It feels the best when someone liked my fic enough to take the time to comment rather than drop a like. I still appreciate likes/reblogs but the comment or reblog with comments/tags will always be what I want more of.
Overall, I’m not telling anyone not to be motivated by the overall number and not to seek it out if that's really what they want and what they feel they need. I’m just saying in my experience that's the fastest way someone will burn out, especially if they aren't doing anything to step their game up to get it and expect it to just come to them.
“Big Blogs are threatened when smaller blogs get attention.”
There’s enough attention for everyone to go around. I can't stress that enough. Before I was a writer I'd consume fanfics like air. There is no big blog that could ever ice you out from readers just from not interacting with you. Readers don't give two shits who big read or reblog if they come across a story they like. Honestly, until I became writer i didnt even look at the timeline or what writers said/did/drama. I found a story through tags and then searched up that authors masterlist lol and went on my way.
However, I don’t know if this qualifies as “threatened” but for example if I am working on a “football player x cheerleader” fic and I see someone else has just posted one halfway through me working on it I will make it a point to not read their fic until im done with mine (if my adhd ass remembers). The reason is I don’t want to be subconsciously influenced or if we do have some similarities as I at least want to have plausible deniability of being inspired lmfao.
Because if I read it and I'm doing something similar I'm gonna feel forced to change my idea and I don't wanna change something I originally thought of. So I don’t know if that's necessarily threatened as much as I want to keep the integrity of my idea separate since it wasn’t a case of inspo originally. I know it would still be my idea regardless since it wasn’t inspo but it still would feel a bit icky to me, personally to keep it in having read someone else's fic and not give them credit. So I avoid that just by not reading similar concepts I'm working on.
You know it's funny because back when I started in 2023 people would deliberately not post a fic that had a similar concept to someone else's right away, they would wait a week or two out of courtesy and not wanting it to look like they were riding coat tails. I have to say I started my fic The Nursery in Oct 2023 and I was going to post the first chapter Jan 2024. I ended up waiting months until August 2024 (i got adhd and worked on other things) to actually post it because someone else wrote a yakuza fic with toji and sukuna and i didnt want to look like I was piggybacking even though my idea was completely different lmfao.
Now the current state of jjkblr is different though with the tikokification of fics. The majority churns out the same concept and no one blinks an eye. I'm not saying ppl should have to wait to post something, I don't think they should but its just more of before people were actively trying NOT to post the same things lmfao. Like I said idk if this qualifies as "threatened" but more of preserving the intellectual integrity of ideas and seeking to be as original as possible.
but this leads into the next thing...
“Big Blogs think they own concepts.”
No one owns a concept.
However, I think this one ultimately boils down to a lack of fandom etiquette: you need to give inspo credit where it's due.
For example: “Rockstar Gojo x Talent Agent Reader” is a concept.
If someone writes “Rockstar Gojo who fucks Talent Agent Reader on the tour bus and he didnt know he was accidentally on live and their sex tape goes viral on twitter and she gets fired by record label exec nanami and gojo proposes” and a week later someone else writes “Popstar Gojo who fucks Talent Agent Reader in the studio and he didnt know he was accidentally on live and their sex tape goes viral on TikTok and she gets fired by record label exec nanami and reader and gojo elope” that’s beyond a concept that's their whole ass narrative.
You just reheated their nachos and added on a bit of extra salsa.
Sure it’s not a direct 1:1 plagiarism copy and you wrote it in your own words but in this instance you need to at least give inspo credit for their core plot. If I see that I'm 100% asking for inspo credit.
A concept is abstract. It's very broad and very generic. When you start adding details and plot progression that's when you start building a whole narrative and plot. Sure, some details like getting caught or getting fired might happen similarly but the overall story structure and flow of the fic should not line up 1:1.
Honestly I have never shied away from that either. I give credit if im brainstorming with people. I give credit to beta readers who call out minor plot holes/inconsistencies and give suggestions or just someone reading a fic and telling me if its good or not cause im too in my head lmfao. You know how novels have acknowledgements? I do the same with my fics.
I promise you people will still want to read it regardless of if you were inspo’d or not. We all know by now the fandom loves regurgitated shit lmfao so what's the big deal?
I feel so many people want to be seen as “so original” and want all the shine when you would get just as much shine, if not more, if you just admitted to where the idea for your story came from. No author should be mad about you getting inspired by them and giving them getting inspo credit and if they are then they are the problem not you.
Honestly, if we all want to be a more supportive community we can start there tbh, give credit where its due to big and small writers alike. (yes, there has def been big writers guilty of stealing ideas)
I’ve had plenty people ask me if they can write something inspired by my works and I’ve always said yes. However, 9/10 those people are just people with a lot of integrity as I would have never asked for credit or even thought they read my story because it's something with a similar concept but completely different narrative.
For example like— “Rockstar Gojo x Talent Agent reader who Talent Agent Reader is sick of his party lifestyle and cleaning up his messes. One night reader lets a bit too loose at a celebrity party and Gojo takes care of her for a change and paparazzi catch them fucking in his car and reader isn't taken as seriously anymore in the industry.” That is how you take an idea and make it your own without needing to give inspo credit (if you don't want to) because you transformed it into something different using the same concept. It's still them being caught and readers having work issues but its a completely different dynamic and narrative. If you keep the same dynamic and narrative you need to give credit.
That said, sure, we are all nerds into anime and the similar things. It’s not out of this world two people would write a Rockstar Gojo fic that has a similar plot and post within a week of each other. However, it becomes obvious that inspo was taken when the story narrative follows the exact same pattern and story progression, especially if they are both longer fics or one is longer and the other is basically a shortened version of it.
The fact that @/sweethearticism has gotten so much hate for asking for credit from people who use her OC she customized in extreme detail is pure insanity to me. You don't need to credit her for writing gojo twins—you do need to credit her if you use her twin OC. What's the difference between that and any other OC someone has? Just cause this OC is Gojo's twin and y'all gojo bitches are insane?? lol this is why i clown on him so much cause i swear y'all saw blue hair and white eyes and thought these pixels where a manifestation of christ himself (don't duck if it don't apply). Can we just go around stealing ppl OCs now?? It honestly reads as immaturity and jealousy to me because I doubt she would be getting this hate for anyone else's twin.
The most boring thing to me would be intentionally rewriting someone else's whole fic/idea in my own words. I think it says a lot about the state of fanfiction and this community, of who is out for clout and who lacks creativity by the fact people are advocating more to copy others OCs, narratives, full plots than advocating for the integrity of their own ideas and creativity.
“Big Blogs ignored me.”
Ok this to me has the most simplest answer. First and foremorest, this app/website is buggy asf and I was unintentionally ignoring people, losing asks and not seeing comments when I only had like 40 followers lol.
But now? Depending on your blog size you can get upwards of 40-60k interactions a month, some get way more, 100k or more. There’s a good chance they just didn’t see it.
There is 150+ asks in my inbox right now. I get anxiety just looking at it lmfao. It really triggers my executive dysfunction of freezing up and not doing shit lol. There are times where I don’t want to even be active on the timeline to give an update about a story or share a thought cause I feel guilty and in my mind people are gonna be like “Why isn’t this bitch answering her asks ??” lmfao (i know no one is thinking that but i still cant help but to think they are). Also answering them just lets people know im online and I will answer 3 and get 5 more. Sure I could delete them all and start fresh, or I could turn off asks but I don’t want to make myself unavailable, I do appreciate every ask and I love seeing them. I also don’t answer them until I know I am in the right mood, or not too tired to give them 100% so they just pile up :/
Also this goes without saying or it should but please make sure to read DNI lists/rules before sending in stuff to anyone big or small. If someone says no requests and you send them requests, well duh they are ignoring it. Also do not ask overly personal questions if the writer has not explicitly stated they are comfortable with it. Everyone will have different boundaries, just because you can flirt, trauma dump, story rec one author doesn't mean you can with anyone else.
At the end of the day, no one is obligated to give anyone their time or their energy. If there was a writer who only wanted to drop stories and not interact at all that's still valid. Don't make people's interaction or lack of it a problem find the people who are receptive to you as thats the spaces you will be happiest in.
“Big Blogs think they are above criticism.”
No one on this app is the y/n of jjkblr and y'all have to realize despite what the internet may gas you to believe no one has to give a flying fuck about your opinion and your opinion for damn sure isn't needed just because you personally don't like something.
Not everyone WANTS critique. Big or small. Not everyone is trying to be a novelist one day. A lot of people just want to be goofy, write and make friends on here, that's okay. Not everyone wants to improve or be shakespeare some people just want to vibe in the fandom.
If someone is not open for critique for the love of god, get your head out of your ass and move on. The biggest narcissist of them all is the person who thinks their opinion should matter to everyone else and the content they don't like (which is not actually affecting you because literally close your fucking eyes and scroll a way, no one is forcing you to interact).
If you don't like the subject (etc, dead-dove, violence/incest/noncon) you are not going to be able to give a constructive critique. "Don't write this because xyz" isn't constructive.
There is a lot of delulu people who think they are giving constructive criticism so let's go over what that is.
Constructive:
It focuses on observable behaviors or facts rather than making vague or general statements. "there were some plot inconsistencies..." vs "this story sucks"
It provides clear recommendations or "next steps" that the recipient can actually use to improve. "spend a bit more time on setting each scene and what the characters are doing, so we can picture what's going on better. this [insert] confused me."
Is respectful and is delivered with empathy.
Focused on behavior and not personal attacks or assumptions about a person's character.
Destructive:
Often attacks a person's character ("you're a bad person, abuser, etc cause you write xyz").
Offers no solutions or advice. (you can't stop people from writing but you could suggest they tag things better)
Often is done in public in attempt to humiliate and control someone. (shame and negative reinforcement never works. personally im an aggy bitch and if you try to shame me im just going to do it more lmfao.)
Personally if someone has critique about how my story could be improved, plotwise, character wise, etc please let me know. "I don't like this" "this sucks" is not constructive. "i feel like the romance is rushed because we didn't get a real resolution to xyz" is constructive. "i feel like we did not understand the characters motivations for why he is doing xyz when he is usually know for abc" is constructive. I would be SO ecstatic for real constructive criticism but I've honestly never received it outside of a beta reader.
However, one day, I do want to write a novel. I do regularly google writing tips and keep a list of synonyms, etc. This isn't going to be everyone though so do not assume just because your feedback is constructive that it is wanted.
That's it for now! Hopefully this could humanize everything a bit or just give you a look from my perspective. Stay tuned for my next tedtalk which will be "Black Diaspora influences on Modern Japanese Culture." since we have a lot of anti-black hoes ignorant and confused on just how much Black Culture has influenced Japanese culture and I never want to see "A Japanese man wouldn't..." in regards to Black Culture again. :)
I encourage any other writers to chime, big or small and give their perspective. If you disagree with me, you are more than welcome to say so, I'm doing this to encourage open discussion so I hope you will feel empowered enough to @ me, reblog this or comment with your opinion rather than take it to any anon blog.
