August Queer Movie Challenge #2:
Kurak Günler / "Burning Days" (2022)
Kurak Günler is a 2022 Turkish drama. Spoken language is Turkish. The story follows a young prosecutor newly appointed to a rural small town to see to end an abandoned court case investigating the overconsumption of groundwater, and the sinkholes it allegedly causes. He very quickly gets caught up in local politics: The upcoming elections, where access to water is a major talking point, the rape of a disabled Romani girl, for which he is being framed, and a local journalist of bad renown, whom he keeps finding himself entangled with more and more.
The two things that stood out most about this movie for me were the beautiful cinematography and the creeping sense of danger. It is a slow movie, and it is shot and cut that way: The shots linger, allowing us to take in more of the environment. The sinkholes especially are incredibly spectacular. As to the story, it is about being the only person standing up to a corrupt system, and slowly realizing that it is not just the corrupt politicians that you are up against, but also the entire population that believes in them. It is also about water precocity in Turkey. Two subjects that are, unfortunately, very actual.
Beautiful movie, but I will need some more time to properly digest it, and decide where it's going to fit within my personal movie catalogue.
My most sincere thanks to @celluloidrainbow for making it available, and to the director of the queer culture centre for recommending it.
the prosecutor and the journalist writing for the opposition having something going on and getting hunted together is part of the symbolism too i suppose
