The original Laxton Residence (Erickson/Massey, 1964) was precariously set on the highest level of this steep and rocky site. The first addition to the house was a #beachhouse (Erickson/Massey, 1971), set at the base of the sloping site, constructed of a stone retaining wall, with glass facing the sea. A subsequent addition to the main house (Arthur Erickson Architects, 1981), included a generous entry and master bedroom suite, overlooking a new swimming pool, with views also towards the sea. With expanded property, the next addition included a second beach house (Nick Milkovich Architects Inc. w/ Arthur Erickson, 2005), quietly set into the steep bank. It was situated on the bay guarded by a #breakwater, set in a developed landscape with ties to the beach over a broad stair. A master bedroom suite was later placed on the roof of the beach house, with a rooftop blending into the landscape, offering views of the beach, local islands, #BurrardInlet, and distant Vancouver Island. Our latest work includes an extension of the existing #swimmingpool to 60 ft with a further 40 ft reflecting pool, plus a clubhouse below (Nick Milkovich Architects Inc., 2021), again…with breathtaking views. A #glasselevator connects the pool terrace on the main level with the original house to the clubhouse and beach houses below. Skylines YVR: The Mythical “Third Crossing” for Burrard’s Inlet has existed for 43 years (since June 1977) That 3rd Crossing = SeaBus: a passenger-only ferry service, traversing Burrard Inlet every 15 mins. connecting Vancouver-North Vancouver. Owned by TransLink & operated by Coast Mountain Bus Co. >> Translink’s SeaBus fleet consists of the following vessels: MV Burrard Otter • (built 1976/Vancouver)[retired]; MV Burrard Beaver • (built 1976/Victoria)[in use]; MV Burrard Pacific Breeze • (built 2009/Vancouver+Victoria)[in use]; MV Burrard Otter II • (built 2014/Singapore)[in use]; MV Burrard Chinook • (built 2019/Netherlands)[scheduled 2020] • ••• The ferries are catamarans*, constructed out of aluminium, (quite rare when initially designed/built in ‘70s. Vessels are double-ended to travel in either direction without turn around. The twin hull catamaran design offers wider stance upon water, increasing stability, yet reducing both heeling & wave-induced motion (wakes); plus less hydrodynamic resistance requires less propulsive power/greater fuel efficiency.
