Debut: Super Mario Odyssey
Sometimes an enemy completely goes over your head because they don’t seem very significant. But I feel like I’ve always liked Burrbo, I just never knew it! I mean, what the heck is it? It’s great! What are you?
Well, to start, it’s probably a burr. You know, when plants have spikey little seeds that get stuck to you? They’re a pain! But their mouth reminds me of a Goomba, along with their very Galoomba-like muzzle! A Goomba-like creature in a spikey plant shell? Hm...
It sort of makes me think of the Prickly Goombas, from New Super Mario Bros. U! Goombas are named after chesnuts in Japanese, after all, even though they’re supposed to be mushrooms. Here they are in a prickly chesnut-looking shell, which you can burn with a Fire Flower! They have nothing to do with this post, actually. Sorry, back into the vault you go!
Look at Burrbo’s little legs. They’re the funniest.
On top of all that, Burrbos come in five different colours! Or flavors, if you will. Like Jolly Ranchers! Green Apple, Blue Raspberry, Orange (the fruit), Lemon and uh... Pink. Tutti-frutti? Most of those aren’t Jolly Rancher flavors, but these guys just look like candy. If anyone has any Jolly Ranchers, please mail them to me! They don’t sell them here!
But the real reason I’m writing this post, which I’ve put off for too long! The Ruined Dragon boss spits out this special variety of spooky, electric Burrbos! And to be clear, they are referred to as Burrbos in the game’s code, as documented here by our Great Teacher Supper Mario Broth! We all owe a lot to him.
Even though the regular Burrbo is definitely charming, I think I prefer the Ruined Burrbos... it’s the simple, glowing bug-like eyes! Dare I say, it’s even got the world famous eyes-in-a-void! Sometimes a little minimalism is okay when it comes to funny creatures.
I want to pet it, but I feel like that’s a bad idea.
