ROGUE REVIEW "Bursting into Flames" show #712

Martin Dockery rolled in for weekend two of this year’s Rogue Festival with a new show for Fresno audiences, Bursting into Flames. The lean-forward-in-your-seat, near-exhausting-to-watch show demands full concentration and commitment in following Mr. Dockery’s mile-a-millisecond cadence and animated physicality. Though the show itself runs a bit longer than needed and some of the bits and stories drag at times, Mr. Dockery’s marathon performance is overall a superb piece of solo theatre.

As a solo performer, Mr. Dockery is tops in his abilities as a storyteller and actor. His nuances and physical comedy skills are impeccable; it’s as if Jim Carrey, Michael Richards, and Jack Black combined to produce the Martin Dockery we have today.  This particular endeavor has Mr. Dockery bringing the audience into his version of Heaven and Hell, with a creative culminating scene that brings the concept of both eternities full-circle. The bursts of eccentric enthusiasm work well in his ability to fill a room, work an audience, and never lose steam as a monologist. If you see Mr. Dockery’s name on a Fringe lineup near you, buy a ticket, buckle in, and get ready for a fantastically fun, if not taxing, time watching Bursting into Flames.
