Stupid Tourist

I would have thought I learned my lesson after the combi incident in Arequipa, but clearly not.

Unfortunately from Malargue, Argentina, there are no direct buses to Buenos Aires. I have to make a connection in San Rafael. What I DIDN'T know...is San Rafael is a stop on the Mendoza route.

I arrive early to the bus terminal, but end up missing my bus because I was looking for one going to San Rafael. I finally go up to the counter to ask if my bus is late and am informed that the bus that just left, which said Mendoza...was MY bus. I freak out and ask what my options are knowing this is the last bus that would make my connection to Buenos Aires.

I am told the bus makes a stop in the Plaza before it leaves town and that I still have time to catch it. I try to call a taxi service, but at that moment, my cell phone conveniently decides not to cooperate. I become even more frantic and unconsciously start to whimper. A father, who is at the station with his daughter, sees my desperation and offers to drive me to the Plaza.

I take him up on his offer, but we arrive too late. The bus has already left. He then offers to pursue it. He drives as fast as his Fiat can go.

He indicates that he can see the bus, yet I see absolutely nothing. Just endless horizon. After 5 minutes (or what seems like eternity), I make out a bus and his daughter gets excited and starts jumping up and down in the back, screaming,

"Daddy, daddy, I can see it too! Go faster, go faster!"

We finally catch the bus and get it to stop. Appreciative beyond measure, I compensate the dad for his generosity. I quickly get on and can only imagine what everyone is thinking,...stupid tourist. And I have to do the walk of shame as I was assigned one of the last seats in the upper deck...
