Summer. The most longed for season, when school is finally out and it’s time to truly kick back and relax. I love the feeling of the warm sunlight passing through me, the sky a light blue beauty. Summer is when I feel the most relaxed, when I can be lightweight and just let the breeze carry me. And after the past few months that I just suffered through, I could use all the relaxation I could get. Sadly, my mom had other plans for me. I was officially a college student, so it was time for my first summer job before I moved away. I started working at Movie Tavern, which is sort of a restaurant meets movie theater type of place. Sure, it sounds luxurious to all of the movie-goers, but I quickly found out that having a job was nothing like I thought it would be. I was always on bus crew, which meant I had to go in to the theater after the movie ended and clean the seats and tables, pick up all of the trash, grab the plates and cups and silverware, and sweep before the next movie started seating.
The first few shifts were terrible, but I quickly became really great friends with the two other people on bus crew with me, Robert and Adam. We’d goof around while cleaning up the theaters, playing trashketball and whatever other ridiculous games we could come up with. We had soon formed a bond, and had countless inside jokes, including one that’s actually a song. “So close” by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness isn’t a bad song at all, but I hate it more than I’ve ever hated a song before. Every single day while Adam, Robert, and I were on bus crew, this was the ONLY song that was played in the theaters. It was played on repeat for the entire summer that I worked there, and I swear I heard it about thirty times a day. We were all so fed up with hearing it, and to annoy each other (which was our favorite past time) we’d just walk up behind each other and start singing it. If this song wasn’t forced on me every day of my summer, I probably would’ve loved it. It’s catchy and upbeat and makes you want to dance. Sadly, hearing it so often had ruined it for me. So far, my summer definitely wasn’t relaxing like I had hoped, but I can honestly say working at Movie Tavern was one of my favorite experiences ever.
