but then at some point she feels insecure about being too loud or annoying for him so she tries to like tone it down but then HE notices and was actually like "wait no :(( if that was u annoying me i'd pay u to annoy me more" yadda yadda yadda it's very cute and fluffy u have fun w it :3
okie toodles and merry christmas author!!!
HELLO JELLY ANON! EVERYONE SAY HI TO JELLY ANON! i’m so sorry it took so long for me to get to this, i’ve been drowned by college work loool.
••••••••••
Bob notices small things more often than you think.
Not even just the big differences in his environment, the subtle shifts. His attention to detail is significantly higher than the average person.
So when you stop trying, he feels it immediately.
It happens on a Tuesday. You’re both in the common room. The lights hum softly overhead. There’s a half-eaten bag of chips on the table, one that Bob opened about an hour ago but didn’t get round to eating. Bob’s sitting cross-legged on the couch, sleeves pushed up.
Normally, you’d be sprawled across the furniture like you own it. Talking with your hands. Kicking your feet. Laughing too loud at things that aren’t all that funny.
Bob loves that.
Loves you.
Loves everything about you.
But today, you’re sitting neatly at the opposite end of the couch. Hands folded in your lap. Quiet.
Too quiet.
He watches you over the top edge of his book, eyes flicking up when you don’t say anything for a full minute. Then two. Then three.
“You okay?” he asks, gently, like he’s approaching a skittish animal.
You smile immediately. Your face a little too stiff to be genuine. “Yeah, I’m fine, thanks.”
The smile doesn’t quite reach your eyes.
Bob lowers the book a little. “You don’t look fine.”
You huff, softly. “It’s nothing.”
That’s when he knows something’s wrong.
It didn’t start today.
Bob can trace it back, actually. Back to the gym, two nights ago. John was pacing like a caged animal, frustration radiating off of him. You’d been bouncing on your toes, telling Bob about a stupid video you’d seen, clinging onto him. Because being around him makes everything feel lighter, louder, safer.
John stopped pacing and looked at you.
“Jesus,” he said. “Do you ever turn it off?”
The atmosphere turned awkward.
“What do you mean?” You say, with a short laugh.
John rolled his eyes. “Just saying. Some people like peace.”
Bob had felt something cold and unpleasant twist in his chest. He’d opened his mouth, ready to defend you, but you’d already shrugged it off, already changed the subject.
You’re good at that. Very good.
Now, sitting beside him but miles away, you’re being careful. Measuring your movements. Speaking only when spoken to. When Bob gets up to refill his glass of water, you move aside automatically, apologising even though you’re nowhere near in the way.
“I’m sorry,” you say, quiet.
He stops short.
“For what?” he asks.
You blink. “I-nothing. Just, sorry.”
Bob sets the glass down slowly, like any sudden movement might scare you off. He sits back down, closer this time, turning his body toward you fully.
“You haven’t apologised this much since the time you knocked over that entire shelf in the lab,” he says. “And even then you mostly just laughed.”
You huff a small breath. “Guess I’m growing.”
He studies you. The way your shoulders are tense. The way your knee still wants to bounce but doesn’t, like you’re holding it down by sheer will.
“Did John say something to you again?” he asks.
Your eyes flick up to his, then away again.
Bob exhales slowly, rubbing his thumb along the seam of his jeans. He doesn’t like anger. It scares him, reminds him of things he keeps buried, but right now it simmers low and steady, directed very specifically at one blond man with a mouth he doesn’t know how to use.
“He doesn’t get to do that,” Bob says quietly.
“It’s fine,” you rush in, too fast. “He didn’t mean it like… I mean, he kind of did, but it’s not his fault. I am a lot. I know I can be loud and annoying and-”
“Hey.” Bob reaches out before he thinks better of it, fingers brushing your wrist. “Don’t talk about yourself like that.”
You freeze at the contact, then look at him, eyes shiny in a way that makes his chest ache.
“I don’t want to annoy you,” you say, voice smaller now. “You already have enough going on. I just thought maybe… I could be quieter.”
Something in Bob breaks open.
He shifts closer, fully facing you now, knees almost touching. “Is that why you’ve been holding back?”
You nod, barely. “I don’t want you to get tired of me.”
Bob lets out a short, incredulous laugh, not mocking, just… disbelieving. “You think that would make me tired?”
You shrug. “Maybe? I mean it clearly makes John annoyed.”
Bob swallows.
He thinks about the way your laughter fills rooms he’s spent years feeling empty in. The way your energy drags him into the present when his mind starts slipping backward. The way you say his name like it’s something warm.
He cups your cheek carefully, like he’s afraid you might disappear if he’s too quick. “If that was you annoying me,” he says softly, “I’d pay you to do it more.”
You blink. “What?”
“I mean it.” His thumb brushes under your eye, catching a tear you didn’t realise had fallen. “You’re not too loud. You’re not too much. You’re… you. And that’s never been a bad thing. John’s just jealous that he doesn’t have a beautiful, funny girlfriend like me.”
That earns a real laugh this time, still a little unsure, but genuine. The sound makes Bob’s shoulders relax instantly, like a knot finally loosening.
“There you are,” he murmurs.
You sniff. “So you don’t want me to, like… tone it down?”
“God, no.” He smiles, small but sincere. “I like you just the way you are.”
You hesitate, then slowly let your shoulders relax. You lean into him, head resting against his shoulder.
“Okay,” you say. “But if I start rambling about that video again-”
“I’ll listen,” he says immediately.
You grin, wide and bright, and wrap your arms around his shoulders, hugging him tightly.
He hugs you back, and whispers an “I love you” in your ear.
