Intentional and indiscriminate bush burning is a major environmental issue in north Ghana. Fires can be used as a tool by hunters or farmers (to drive away reptiles, or renew grassland) but when used widely and indiscriminately results in the loss of food and cash crops, and decreases biodiversity and food security in the area. Such destructive bush burning is illegal, but continues to be a common problem.
