On Red Emma's
A couple of times now it has been bitter-bone-chilling cold, and the bf and I have been caught down in Mt. Vernon after leaving some venue or another. So we remember that Red Emma's has spicy hot chocolate, so we walk over and burst inside, and there are warm lights and people sitting around at their laptops or at the coffee bar chatting with their dreadlocks or bike helmets or homeless-person jackets. And then I get to browse their left-wing stock, which is big on cultural studies, DIY, history, and politics. I've learned to kind of glassily ignore the left-wing books about Israel in favor of everything else. Since a whole lot of people I've run into in the past few years were reading/have read Infinite Jest, I thought about buying the copy that was on the fiction shelf. I actually picked it up and carried it around for a while (skulked, maybe), and there were maybe a few too many people chatting at the coffeebar, and the book was maybe a little too bulky, and I thought, jeez, I'm going to look like some bushy-tailed college freshman trying soooooo hard to impress people. So, I put the book down, on the wrong shelf, because I couldn't stand to walk back to the corner where a clerk was threatening to eye me. I found a book about soap-making and bought that instead.
In any event, if I read it at some point, I think it would be more fun to get someone's used copy with lots of scribbled notes in it. Plus, I feel silly buying old books new.
It seems like I've been skulking around a lot lately, but I think it's a December/January kind of behavior of mine. You know, with the lack of daylight and all making me a bit more insane.
And about Israel, that's just a topic that kind of makes my stomach turn loops. I can't stand any blanket statements that get made about it.
