Kovilpatti's Abandoned Bus Stand Turns Into Hub for Anti-Social Activities
Once a promising project, the additional bus stand in Kovilpatti has now become a haven for anti-social activities, according to public complaints. Constructed at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore on 3.97 acres along the Tirunelveli-Madurai national highway, the bus stand was inaugurated on July 16, 2007, by then Minister for Rural Development and Internal Affairs, Chief Minister MK Stalin.
However, despite its initial promise, the bus stand has seen no long-distance Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses in over a decade. The facility, which can accommodate up to 30 buses, has become largely unused, with the TNSTC halting its services shortly after the stand was opened. Passengers who wish to board or alight at Kovilpatti are often dropped off on the service road or even the national highway itself, putting their safety at risk, particularly during late hours.
Residents have also raised concerns about the lack of proper lighting at the bus stand, creating an ideal environment for illicit activities during the night. Liquor bottles are often found scattered around the premises, and the public fears the escalating security issues.
While the bus stand was briefly repurposed to house shops after the Kovilpatti market's redevelopment, some traders still occupy the area illegally, further adding to the facility's neglect.
Despite the difficulties, Kovilpatti municipal officials are actively seeking funds to rejuvenate the facility. Municipal Chairman Karunanidhi revealed that the civic body has requested Rs 2.25 crore for the revamp, which includes measures to make mofussil buses use the bus stand again. He also highlighted that during the 10-year AIADMK regime, the facility was deliberately sidelined due to political reasons.
Future plans include the construction of a subway under the national highway to ensure safe pedestrian crossings. The municipality hopes that with these efforts, the bus stand will once again serve its intended purpose and contribute to Kovilpatti’s growth while curbing the rise of anti-social activities in the area.
