“toews is probably the best 1-on-1 defender in the national league” say that again!!
i was watching Deltarune theory videos and honestly, its one thing for someone who’s just casually playing to misgender Kris, but these guys whole deal is analyzing dialogue, you’d think they would know what pronouns the protagonist uses!
it’s complaint time, everyone, buckle up. bc once in a while even i need to vent properly. at this point idc about the plot problems anymore, but!
The issue of Mavis’ body bothers me!!! Above all, on a metatextual level. The fetishization of young girls in Anime/Japan is a massive problem and is only perpetuated by things like this. How many times has Mavis been shown naked?? Or the other young girls, but I’m gonna go with her as an example here mostly bc with her there’s always this argument of her actually being older, thus apparently making it okay. But just consider: Mashima didn’t have to make Mavis look like a 12 year old. He could have easily aged her up before her death. Wonder why he didn’t…? Ya. That’s catering to a problematic audience. And he’s doing that with her so much and it’s so unnecessary.
This isn’t an issue of ‘but many grown-ups are small and flat-chested!’ Mavis didn’t grow/age normally and simply happens to look ‘a little flatchested’ (like p.ex. Levy), she was cursed at 12 years old (and then led a miserable and isolated life from then on until her death, which cant be exatly healthy for her psyche and maturity). Physically, she is a child, and that was a conscious choice.
I’m not even talking about her character/role/identity inside the story. That’s a whole other matter and I’m not gonna delve into it. But I think it’s important to be aware of what Mashima, as an author, is continually choosing to do. It would be so easy to not draw young girls naked, or bent over, or dripping with all sorts of fluids!!
Basically: Mavis’ (and Wendy’s, etc.) sexualization perpetuates Very Wrong real life problems like pedophilia on an intertextual level by sexualizing childlike appearances and innocence and making them desirable. (You can go read up on this issue – especially in anime and japanese culture. Google is your friend and helper.)
Still fucking shell shocked over the fact that when I came out to my mom, she said “this isn't a surprise”
