The first episode of utena and the last episode of utena...... tells me the entirety of himemiya as a character and it is destroying me. She is abused and demeaned by saionji constantly, enough to make other people intervene, and yet we still see her show up to the duel for him? She tells utena that she has to do whatever saionji wants, being the rose bride and all, but the tone and expression on her face are so hollow that it makes me think of someone who has been so totally brainwashed i.e "there is no war in ba sing se". Her understanding of the duels and her role as Rose Bride is a very, incredibly subtle way to build her up as a puppet master, someone with all the answers but will only share what the plot permits. People call her weird and others just dont care about her existence, period. She does all of this for akio, and regardless of how he hurts her (or how she tends to hurt HERSELF) she still shows up for him time and again because it's so ingrained in her, through a combination of dread and fear and love for him. Anthy suffers so much, every minute of this show, because of akio, and it slips through so early at times? Side note: touga watching the duel from inside of the tower, usually where akio is after this point, is a really awful/interesting hint at their dynamic I think
