So we had a visiting Important Person today (so you know this will be a fun story, right?). I was tasked to be the person to meet him at the elevators and give him the molecular run-down, since 1) I'm there earliest, and 2) I'm the molecular expert for our team anyway. [Sidenote, I was not informed of this yesterday; I found out via email this morning. Good thing I keep a nice shirt at work!] This is how it went down.
Important Person (IP) gets off the elevator and I greet him, welcoming him to our lab, blah blah blah. I then segue into saying I'm gonna give him the molecular run-down so he has a foundation for the rest of the tour later, but polite because I know how to handle these IP-types by now.
IP: *interrupts me* I'm sorry, but I'm going to wait for your molecular expert to tell me all of this.
Me: Yes, sir. I understand that. I'm actually--
IP: The person who will take me to the molecular expert. If they're not available, please take me to [Dr. Boss Guy].
Me: . . . Okay, [Dr. Boss Guy]'s office is just this way.
*I take him to Boss's office*
Me: Mr. IP wanted me to bring him to you to wait for his molecular expert.
Dr. BG: *confused ... points to me*
IP: Oh... Well, then, shall we continue?
And we continue. Like, no apologies. No "wow I'm a colossal dickhead". Nothing. If anything, he was annoyed that I didn't look like the molecular expert he was expecting.
