Ooma Butterfleye Review | Digital Trends
"The Ooma Butterfleye camera has some smart features, but it doesn't bring night vision to the table."
Wireless operation and internal storage
Good quality, auto adaptive imaging
Free 7-day cloud recording
Made of high quality materials
No night vision support
No manual image controls to adjust the brightness and contrast balance
Premium functions that are blocked for subscriptions behind the Paywall
While you may know Ooma as an Internet phone provider, this year the company is focusing on smart home protection with a range of devices, including smoke detectors, door, window and motion detectors, and today's Ooma Butterfleye camera.
Ooma, known as “the smartest camera in the world”, bought the product late last year when it devoured Butterfleye, Inc., an Indiegogo start-up founded in 2016. Butterfleye is a compact, wireless 1080p surveillance camera that packs the intelligence to detect people, pets, and various sounds.
With internal backup, battery storage and seven days of free cloud recording support, the camera is a convenient solution for home surveillance. It competes against Netgear Arlo Pro 2, the Swann Smart Security Camera and Logitech Circle 2, all of which offer the same wireless operation and high-resolution imaging.

The chunky, rectangular form factor (3.7 x 3 x 1.5 inches) of the Butterfleye is available in black or white and is more like a mini PC or media streamer than a smart cam, but is solidly built. Regardless of whether you are a fan of the unconventional design or not, it limits the device to desktop mounting, unlike competitors that support standard wall or ceiling mounts. On the other hand, an internal memory of 16 or 32 GB ($ 249) and a battery that supports use for several weeks with a single charge ensure that the camera also works in the event of power and internet failures.
If you want Butterfleye to spread its wings outdoors, keep in mind that the camera has not yet been waterproofed, but can withstand extreme levels of temperature and humidity. Ooma strives to replace cameras that have problems outdoors. That is good news.
Fast setup, incomplete pairing
If you're building a collection of Ooma Home security products, you'll be pleased to see that the camera is now built into the company's home security app (not previously built in) and also works with Amazon Alexa.
The Ooma can now interact with all other Ooma Home sensors through the Ooma Home app, and the app displays the list of video clips recorded by the Butterfleye. For example, if a motion sensor detects activity in the front entrance area, a camera in the living room can automatically record a clip to indicate whether an unauthorized person has entered the house. If a camera hears a loud noise while the Ooma Home app is set to away mode, a siren can automatically detonate to deter an intruder.
Butterfleye has done a better job than most other contrast adjustments for views with bright window areas.
We found it difficult to set up the camera with our smartphone. The Butterfleye app instructs users to turn on the camera, and Bluetooth connection and setup should be automatic. It was not like that. We manually paired the camera and nudged around for about five minutes until the setup magically (and mysteriously) came to life.
High quality, albeit narrow imaging, but no night vision
The 1/3 inch 3.5 megapixel CMOS sensor from Butterfleye does an excellent job of capturing a crisp, clear daytime image, although despite the claim of a 120 degree field of view, we thought the view compared to other recently tested smart cams was rather tight. On the plus side, the video had no noticeable fisheye effect.
The camera is equipped with an automatically adaptive white and black balance and an exposure to optimize the image acquisition. We found the feature to work, but you may need to mess around with positioning to get the best results. Butterfleye did a better job of adjusting the contrast for views with bright window areas than most of the others (in tests, we found that most smart cameras suffer from overexposure here), although this resulted in a much darker interior than we would like would have. As we see with many smart cameras, Butterfleye lacks manual image controls that could help.
Another important gap is night vision. Almost all of the smart cameras we tested have an infrared sensor for illuminating dark areas – a sensible inclusion for a security device. Unfortunately, Butterfleye only contains a function with high sensitivity to light in low light conditions, which fairly improves the images in low light conditions. In pitch darkness, Butterfleye simply cannot cut through the darkness, which is a sensational weakness.
Intelligent functions that are blocked behind a paywall
Despite this obvious imaging problem, the developers at Butterfleye have obviously worked hard to put intelligence under the hood, but much of the magic is behind a paywall, which is a real shame. While the camera is continuously recording (using AC power), it saves storage space (and saves time when monitoring activities) by recording only when an event is triggered, e.g. B. a movement or a detected sound. A video buffer five seconds before the triggered event is added to ensure that you can see everything that has happened. The recordings take 20 seconds when the camera is connected and 10 seconds when the battery is running.
We have found that Butterfleye's motion detection is sharp and responsive. Push notifications hit our phone within seconds when triggered. It is also intelligent enough to recognize when it is moving and to notify you accordingly. Loud noise warnings can be triggered by bumps or broken windows, although we have found that the audio recording overall is very loud and unrefined. The camera also supports pet alarms, reducing the number of false alarms when your furry friends roam the house. Although the family cat was added to the Digital Trends review team and wandered around the room, we were unable to trigger a pet alarm.
The camera is equipped with an automatically adaptive white and black balance and an exposure to optimize the image acquisition.
Face recognition is another useful addition to the Butterfleye functional cabinet. However, it is one that is disappointingly trapped behind a subscription paywall. You'll have to pay $ 100 a year or $ 10 a month to expand the camera's features to a few that many competitors can get instantly. Two-way audio, geo-fencing (arming the camera when you are away from home), multi-user support, and a "quiet mode" notification mode are only available when you purchase Ooma's Home Secure membership, along with one 30-day cloud storage.
We're not big fans of pay-as-you-play smart cam subscription models, especially when they block features that we expect from a $ 199 / $ 249 device. Unfortunately for Ooma, it only watered down what could have been more competitive for Butterfleye in a market full of choices.
Warranty information
Ooma Butterfleye is backed by an excellent 60-day money-back guarantee and a generous three-year guarantee.
Our opinion
While Ooma Butterfleye instantly supports some smart features and puts a few more behind a subscription paywall, it's a confusing thing that ultimately doesn't do justice to its ambitious billing. A combination of wireless operation, high-quality (albeit tight) automatic adaptive imaging, and free seven-day cloud storage is a tempting proposition, but lack of night vision is a critical flaw in any smart camera.
Face recognition is an exciting, emerging feature that could make Butterfleye stand out from mid-range competitors. In addition to other more basic features that are immediately available in other cameras, you'll have to pay $ 100 a year to find out how well they work. Given the lack of night vision support from Ooma Butterfleye, few will take care of it.
Is there a better alternative?
If you're looking for a wireless, weatherproof premium smart cam and have money left over, the Netgear Arlo Pro 2 is expensive ($ 480 for a 2-camera system), but it performs well and has the lack of night vision features Oomla Butterfleye and a security siren. For a budget deal, the $ 149 Swann Smart Camera may recently have a security risk, but offers an inexpensive mix of features and performance.
How long it will take?
Ooma is new to the smart home game and has a good reputation in this category. While the Ooma Butterfleye package has a number of shortcomings, a strong money-back guarantee and a three-year guarantee indicate that the company is committed to customer support.
Should you buy it
No. Ooma Butterfleye has some solid features, but buying a smart camera with no night vision support isn't a good choice. And since many of the camera's great features are only available through an expensive subscription, you should go elsewhere.
Updated in August 2018 to determine that the Ooma Butterfleye is now integrated with the Ooma Home Security system and Amazon Alexa.
