Postcard - Button Quails in acrylics
hey look it’s me after any major holiday with food!
So I made some pysanky using button quail eggs! I learned that they are not only more fragile than chicken eggs, the shells also burn much more easily. But these are the six survivors.
The 2 red breasted boys I held back to replace the wild type male I had. One (pic 1 & 3) is younger than the other by a good deal, so I'm curious to see if he'll color in more like the other as he grows up or if he'll keep the heavy patterning. RB males are supposed to basically look like WT but with more red on the chest/belly/sides. There's also some kind of modifier or something in the RB mutation (?? unclear if it expresses in other mutations or not) called "Darth Vader" that makes them even darker colors, and I know that's what the older boy (pic 2 & 4) probably is. So that could account for it, too.
I like the older boy better in terms of color, if the younger one never changes, but man, he's a loud little fucker. I don't know if I would be able to stand keeping him, if he's gonna scream as much as he does. His father wasn't nearly so noisy.
