In retrospect, it wasn’t the most polite thing she’d ever done, staring at the man from across the restaurant. The place wasn’t crowded, and Edith was certain she’d been spotted, but there was something so ― intriguing wasn’t the correct word. Nor was magnetic, nor fascinating, but even so, Edith found herself unable to look away apart from short bursts.

Long hair. A scruffy face, sharp features. The word dark filled Edith’s head, all at once, and she remembered the face. But from where? 

She recalled him. Recalled him cloaked in shadow, recalled a message, something, he opened his mouth, she opened her eyes, and there was no man, only the open window of her bedroom and the warmth of her blankets. Had it all been a dream?

But that was foolish. Nonsense for fairy stories, and besides ― the faces you dream are the faces you’ve seen. Edith rose from her chair, excusing herself momentarily from her meal, and approached him.

❝ Excuse me, ❞ she said, ❝ Not to be rude, but you look terribly familiar to me. You might have the advantage; I’m afraid I can’t place you. ❞
