Buyeo, South Korea. 2023
That's Lee Bong-ryeon, The Value of the Secret Sunshine (Scandal')
Coverage of the various historical cultures, rulers, and states of the Far East
According to legend it was Hae Mo-su of Joseon who founded the Korean kingdom of Buyeo, presumably being remembered because he forged one or more previously tribal entities into a state out of the Seo Dansan culture.
I was re-reading Mark E. Byington’s work on Buyeo, and something that I found interesting was the discussion regarding how Buyeo’s friendly relations with the Han were predicated on the security of Han’s hold on Xuantu. Friendly relations were maintained continuously with the Han from 49 AD (when formal relations were established) till the de facto separation of Liaodong from the Han in 189 AD, with two exceptions:
111-120 AD: Gorguryo forced the Han Dynasty to withdraw from Xuantu, allowing them to threaten further attacks and expansion against Buyeo’s southern frontier. The Han’s acquiescence to this state of affairs by resuming its’ relationship with Gorguryo in 109 AD likely served to provoke the military response by Buyeo against the Han in 111 AD, likely in order to reinforce its’ now vulnerable southern frontier. Good relations were restored only when the Han reasserted its’ position in Xuantu in 120 AD.
167-174 AD: Buyeo was compelled to join Tanshihuai’s coalition against the Han Dynasty in 167 AD, a coalition that also included Goguryo. Buyeo then left the coalition and resumed the alliance with the Han, but only after the Han had checked Gorguryo’s aggression and reasserted itself in Xuantu.
In both instances, the stability of Xuantu is key in characterising the relationship between the Han Dynasty and Buyeo; when Xuantu’s stability is weakened, friendly relations are suspended, and when the Han reasserts itself, friendly relations returns.
Buyeo (부여) is a pretty, countryside town with a slower pace of life and terrific historical sights in South Korea.

The 64th Baekje Cultural Festival | 제 64회 부여 백제문화제
I was lucky enough to attend the opening ceremony of the 64th Baekje Cultural festival, started in 1955 to celebrate the ancient Baekje kingdom and visit Buyeo, the historical county.
The festival will run from 09.15 ~ 09.22 and is worth the trip if anyone’s looking for some cultural experience this Saturday.
The festival this year is celebrating Baekje as the birthplace of the Hallyu wave, highlighting Korea’s rich historical culture of music and dance. The mixing of tradition performance and modern culture made the show even more exciting to watch, with acts such as girl group GBB and adored rock band Buzz highlighting the event.
With the on-stage performances, lanterns, and fireworks the Baekje Cultural Festival is exciting at night. There’s also a lot to keep you occupy during the day.
Exchange your money for ancient coins and use them to pay for traditional culture workshops and goods, or watch the day time shows with makgeolli rice wine and pancakes.
