A Good Cup of Coffee
3Nov2024
I know my subject matter is sometimes all over the map, but I do try to write about what is relevant to me at the time. The past six months or so have seen a variety of challenges, but one I haven't spoken of is a good cup of coffee. Odd, I know, but maybe I can explain. If you have any habits, you may be able to relate. If you like coffee, I'm sure you can.
I've written about all of the challenges this year to a varying degree, but among those is just being happy with the cup of elixir that I use to rouse my brain in the beginning of the day. I've been a coffee drinker since my teens, and although it's probably not healthy, it is what it is. I've had coffee in different countries, regions, and states and have been flexible in what was available.
I have found over that time, i don't care much for espresso, or latte or any description that takes longer to give the barista than it does to drink it. I have had some really good cups of the stuff and some really bad ones, too. I'm simple. A medium roast, a little sugar (amount varies on effort to lose weight), and usually whole milk instead of cream. It sounds simple, and it is, but I'm not demanding. I will drink anything from a light breakfast blend to a heavy dark roast and will use any decorations except for the stuff in the pink packet.
So, why is it that I can't seem to enjoy a good cup of coffee at home? Yes, that is an entirely weird thing to ask, but you would think after basically settling down and calming my Nomadic ways, I would be able to enjoy coffee the way I want it. I should simply buy the flavor I like, make sure I have enough sugar and milk in the house and I would be happy. Um, no.
For some unearthly reason, the combination that I believed to be my preferred taste, doesn't hit the spot and I'm not even sure I like it like that. What? Seriously? How utterly ridiculous is it not to be able to enjoy the coffee that I picked out? It's been my 'preference' for decades. Are my tastes changing? The bad thing is, I'm having a very hard time finding a new preference. Do I really even enjoy coffee anymore? Yes, I know, that's blasphemous.
Maybe, I need the constant mix of coffee from office buildings, coffee shops, convenience stores, and where ever else I can find it, to appreciate what I thought was my favorite for so long. Was it ever my favorite, or just something familiar? Is this what a mid-life crises is supposed to be like - over coffee? If I don't like coffee, what else has changed or what do I like?
Don't be silly. I love coffee, but I think I might actually miss the variety that makes me appreciate the staple. Either that or I really have begun to lose it, and this is just the first sign. Whichever the case, I'm going to wrap this up so I can go get a cup. Habits are habits, after all.
