These sad news on the passing of actor James Van der Beek because of cancer aged only 48 are in Catalan, my mother tongue. But they mention our Shannen at the very end, and talk about the American health system and I thought it was important to share.
Here's my translation:
Celebrities and friends donate $2 million to Van der Beek's widow, who has no money due to the actor's cancer
A crowdfunding campaign collects donations to help Kimberly Brook and the children of the "Dawson's Creek" actor, who are struggling financially due to treatment
The family of James Van der Beek, best known for the series "Dawson's Creek", who died on Wednesday at the age of 48, has already raised more than 2.6 million dollars (almost 2.2 million euros) thanks to the crowdfunding campaign launched by family friends hours after learning of the actor's death.
Why does the family of a star like Van der Beek, also known for films such as "The Rules of Attraction", have to resort to the support of friends to be able to move forward?
The answer lies, above all, in the extremely high costs of medical care in the United States, which has one of the most expensive health systems in the world, private for the majority of the population.
To the point that, in a country with less than 350 million inhabitants, it is estimated that around 100 million Americans have difficulty paying the debts arising from their medical and dental care, according to recent data collected by the BBC.
The British public channel also explains that a chemotherapy treatment in the United States can cost between 1,000 and 12,000 dollars per month, so even people with health insurance may have trouble paying for it.
This in a country where people with intermittent jobs, such as actors, can lose this health coverage. This is probably the case for Van der Beek, who in 2024 explained that a year earlier he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer during a routine check-up.
"High prices have prevented Americans from accessing necessary anti-cancer therapies and making them affordable, thus increasing the risk of non-compliance with treatment, recurrence of cancer and mortality for economic reasons," states, for example, a scientific article published in October 2024 in the journal Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
In fact, the financial problems resulting from the cost of treatment already led Van der Beek, last year, to auction off objects related to "Dawson's Creek" and other series and films in which he had worked.
"I've been saving these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with the unexpected twists and turns that life has taken lately, it's clear that now is the time," he explained at the time.
The wife and children, "without money"
"As a result of this loss, [his wife] Kimberly and the children face an uncertain future. The costs of James' medical care and the long fight against cancer have left the family without money," can be read in the text published on the micro-funding website GoFundMe.
"They are working hard to not lose their home and ensure that the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time," it adds.
So far, in just four days, they have managed to raise more than $2.6 million, well above the initial goal of $250,000, which was quickly reached, and also the subsequent expansion, up to $1.5 million.
Among the celebrities who have put money in are Steven Spielberg and Zoe Saldaña.
The star of films such as "Avatar" and "Emilia Perez" and the series "Lioness" has made a donation consisting of a monthly payment of $2,500, according to the digital Page Six.
For his part, the director of films such as "Jaws", "E.T." or "Schindler's List", and his wife, actress Kate Capshaw, have contributed $25,000.
It so happens that Spielberg was the idol of Dawson Leary, the character that Van der Beek played in "Dawson's Creek".
Other celebrities who have come forward to help Van der Beek's widow and six children include actress Kaley Cuoco ("The Big Bang Theory") and models Lydia Hearst and Miranda Kerr.
Van der Beek is not the first celebrity on screen to face financial difficulties due to the costs of his medical treatment.
In 2024, months before the star of "Dawson's Creek" announced that he had cancer, actress Shannen Doherty, one of the stars of the series "Beverly Hills, 90210", explained that she could not afford the treatment for the cancer she had been diagnosed with.
