38 Great Alt-Rock Songs You Haven’t Thought About In 20 Years
This is for anyone who ever got excited about something that came out of the bargain bin. Presented in the form of a “conversation” so it doesn’t feel impossibly random. What did we leave out?!
1. 1. Dig, “Believe”
Jack: What I want is songs, specifically, that maybe came out of the buzzbin or were actually good or at least fun to listen to, but then we all collectively forgot about them. Talking about that song by Dig, “Believe,” is what really started it. The world has completely erased it from its collective memory.Julie: Dig NEVER 4get. Matthew: I remember this being a thing, but when I try to get it in my head, the Lenny Kravitz song “Believe” is there instead.

3. 2. Ammonia, “Drugs”
Alex: OK, here’s a REAL rando. Buzz bin-y, totally lost to history. Dunno where in my brain I got this from.Alex: This song is halfway Smashing Pumpkins, halfway Lit.Julie: This video is so good already. Skateboarding IN THE HOUSE.Matthew: Wow, that chord progression sounds like they’re trying to play “Summer Babe” but getting it wrong.
Video available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qI_XIzanlOo. youtube.com
5. 3. The Darling Buds, “Spin”
Julie: How about the Darling Buds? I feel like they were totally forgotten.Peggy: I was listening to the DB this morning!Julie: I just rebought one of their records.
Video available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=x0_Qa3uYhzg. youtube.com
7. 4. Whale, “Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe”
Peggy: What about Whale – “Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe”? Not buzzbin but BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD.Matthew: Oh man I know people who will take any opportunity to bring up “Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe.” Did “Slobo” actually mean a thing?
Video available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2up7su7CeMU. youtube.com
9. 5. Catherine Wheel, “Waydown”
Jack: Does Catherine Wheel count for our purposes here?Julie: No. Catherine Wheel transcends.Jack: That is not a phrase that is often heard.Matthew: I think so – that one hit they had anyway, what was the one that was always on 120 Minutes in like 1994?
Video available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9dDJ21ZRElc. youtube.com
11. 6. Green Apple Quick Step, “Los Vargos”
Matthew: OK, so when we started talking about this, this is the first thing that came to mind, though I never ever think of them. I really went in for a lot of faux-glam stuff in the ’90s. Like, I didn’t buy the Spacehog album with the hit on it, but I DID buy the followup.
Video available at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=jvNzzzdNAhM. youtube.com
13. 7. K’s Choice, “Not an Addict”

Dandelion - Weird Out
from the cassette release "Music Television" on Player Press
Dig - Believe
As a tenured music fan with over two decades of dedicated listening under my belt, the list of things that frustrate me about the music industry's digital age (versus the time I grew up) is incredibly brief. Perhaps the most prominent entry on that list is the loss of emphasis on the art of the album. Standing as a prominent counter-argument to this personal lament is Dig's 1993 self-titled debut.
I have talked about purchasing this record the same day as Afghan Whigs Gentlemen as a 14 year-old (even predicted I would post about this song at some point, ha!). The Afghan Whigs of course became one of my life-long favorites, never that far out of my regular rotation. Dig on the other hand, well I'm still pretty much left with thinking about "Believe" every few months and saying to myself: "Damn. That was a good song. It's a shame the rest of the album sucked wild donkeys."
And in the digital age, that wouldn't have been a problem, and they wouldn't have conned me out of an EXTREMELY hard earned 15 dollars (again, it was 1993 and I was only 14, things were different.) Now if this had been a single, I could have dropped four bucks or something for the seven inch, been happy to have it, and never considered buying a full-length from the band when I never heard another decent song from them.
With the benefit of retrospect, I would actually get the band I was hoping I was getting with Dig a few years later in Juno, who I definitely need to share more from. No relation between the two bands, but the high energy, dense three-guitar attack with so many great lines to follow within would fulfill the promise made by Dig in their one hit. And with Juno, I get the benefit of of Arlie Carstens's powerful voice and poetic lyrics instead of the fairly asinine affair we have here.
And to be clear, Dig had some degree of cred, one of their guitarist was in Thelonious Monster, which...okay, and frontman Scott Hackwith helped in production with the Ramones and was a video art director, which may explain why this video looked like it was spliced together pieces of 90's alt video b-roll.
Okay, I've picked on these guys enough, I guess I'm still bitter almost two decades later about being mugged by a deceivingly awesome lead single. I've got another album from 1993 that spawned an even more complex relationship for me comin' at noon. - MO
Eels - Novocaine For the Soul
I can't stop thinking about this song since Mark told me earlier today he was getting a tooth pulled. -a
Yuck are yummy. There's something familiar about the London-based band's sound. Maybe it's because I had all of the MTV Buzz Bin albums when I was a kid?
The new, road-trippy clip for "Get Away" is above. Can't help that the 90s are so delicious.
