Social media - A buzz chart by Ad Age
For this blog post I go back to Ad Age, one of my favorite resources. Today the site published a brand new chart that compares brands with the biggest increases in Twitter chatter and how much of a television presence those brands have. This week's "chatter chart" winner was none other than Victoria's Secret Pink. This hits close to home since just last week we hosted the company's annual Pink Party on the Drill Field. However, it's not Virginia Tech's party that caused the company to trend on Twitter. Instead, Victoria's Secret launched a promotion to offer free merchandise to the 10 schools who tweeted #tailgatewithpink the most. Think about that...Victoria's Secret had the biggest gains in social media chatter WITHOUT ANY TV PRESENCE! This just reiterates the immeasurable and overwhelming presence social media has in today's society. In comparison, Kia (the car dealer) ranked number 9 on Ad Age's chart. It benefited from a presence on television with its awesomely funny dancing and rapping hamster commercials. Apparently people like to tweet about the furry animals.
Back to my main point, though: social media and Twitter are HUGE. Everyone is using it now and advertisers and companies are jumping on the bandwagon pretty quickly. It's a great way to engage target audiences and publics while still getting important information out there. Victoria's Secret got its name out in the public once again just by offering some free merchandise to schools that tweet at them. This is majorly raising their brand awareness and creating opportunities for more customers to find and follow their brand. This in turn leads to more sales and more revenue for the company.
Social media - though still not as big as the TV or radio - is creeping up there and getting ready to knock some of the most classic platforms for advertisements out of the way. Following this chart (see here) will be interesting in the coming weeks. Look for more posts about it!
