[college AU spoilers: it goes OT4 S/N/B/S. here is Sam and Bucky’s first kiss.]

Their shared bedroom has been night-terror free for nearly amonth. It’s such a rare occurrence to not be woken once or twice a week by hisroommate’s nightmares that Sam is startled when he wakes up at three in themorning to hear whimpering from across the room.

He thinks about rolling over and trying to go back to sleep –most of the time Barnes was embarrassed by the violent nightmares and drawingattention to them seemed cruel – but then the whimpers form into words and no,Sam doesn’t have enough brain bleach in the world to hear these buriedmemories. Especially not since the weird feelings in his chest started tosolidify, since him and Nat and Bucky and Steve started to feel likehimandNatandBuckyandSteve.

He can’t just let his roommate (just his roommate) suffer through that shit again, so he haulshimself out of bed and pads across the room, avoiding haphazard piles ofclothes and pages of notes on his way, and leans over to shake Bucky’sshoulder.

“Buck? Hey, you’re awake.” He swallows a noise ofsurprise when Bucky’s eyes snap open with a gasp and he grabs for him desperately,curling fingers into the faded jiu-jitsu club t-shirt Sam wears to sleep likehe needs an anchor.

“S-Sam?” It’s that awful little boy voice he getswhen the nightmares are bad, and Sam can’t handle it. He’s only surprised Buckyisn’t looking for Steve, but maybe he doesn’t have that part of his brain awakeyet. He can be the first port of call.

“I’m here.” He wraps his handinstinctively around the one grasping his shirt for dear life, and Buckyfinally focuses on his face like he’s remembered where he is. “I’m gonnasit down with you, okay?”

Bucky nods, absent and jerky, and doesn’t let go of Sam’sshirt for a second. The moment Sam’s sitting down, Bucky crawls into his lapand curls up against Sam’s chest like he doesn’t realise how big he is. For hispart, Sam doesn’t even think about it and just wraps Bucky up in his arms andholds on tight.

“You’re okay man, you’re safe.” He doesn’t knowwhat to do to make anything better, so he hugs Bucky close and lets him comeback to his head in his own time.

The house is strange at this time of night, especially quietwhen Steve is home visiting his Ma and the twins have remembered they don’tlive here for a change. The half-light and silence make things feel uncanny,like they’ve stepped sideways into a fragile bubble out of normal time andspace. Bucky is fever-hot and yielding in Sam’s arms, and when he startsnuzzling into Sam’s shoulder it feels normal, an instinctive extension of thenight and the time out of time they’ve slipped into.

“Hey.” Sam whispers softly, voice cracked fromsleep as Bucky drags his rough stubble and smooth lips over the skin above hist-shirt collar. He finds himself petting Bucky’s hair, stroking fingertips overthe tangled strands compulsively. “You with me?”

“Sam.” Bucky presses even closer into his neck, sotight Sam can feel the damp huff of his breath when he speaks. He sounds likehimself now, still spacey and shaken but back in his body and not lostsomewhere in the past anymore.

He looks up at Sam with starry eyes, a little glassy andlost, pushes himself up a little so they’re face to face and suddenly so, soclose. Sam can feel the rise and fall of his shoulders, smell the tacky, dryingdream sweat on his bare skin. Bucky’s eyes flick down to Sam’s lips, teartracks now all but dried to salt on his cheeks. Then they’re kissing, slow and languid and sleep warm, andSam has no idea who leaned in first. 

There’s nothing heated in it, the touch isfirm and grounding like an essential embrace, something needed. Bucky makes asoft noise as he parts his lips and Sam slips strong hands around his back to holdhim steady. It feels like a natural extension of comforting his friend, givingBucky himself to hold and touch and be bold with, to know that he’s safe, he’ssafe and nobody can hurt him now. His lips taste like sleep and lingering fear,so Sam moves him carefully, so carefully, to straddle his lap. 

Bucky makes asound of relief then, when he’s bracketed by Sam all over, tension seeping outof his muscles when the silent message gets through: you’re here, I’m here, you’re safe, I got you.

I'm so sorry for all that, Kat. That's so frustrating to feel undervalued. But know that we appreciate you over here, and that we miss you too. Take care of yourself, and know that you're worth so much, even if those dicks don't recognize it (or at least don't talk about it like they should).

I’m definitely feeling better now.  Yesterday was my last day, which was pretty much ignored by most but at least at the end, my supervisor, who I’ve worked with most of the six years and up until then was basically acting like ‘don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out’ stopped me and actually got kind of emotional and said he’d miss me.  So that was nice.  Also I’m one of the very few who doesn’t give him a ton of shit, so yeah, buddy, you really are going to miss me.  

But all in all, the blatant indifference was a good reminder of why I left; at the end of the day I was just another ass in the seat.  At least the people at my new job seem excited that I’m going to be there.  Plus, I’m not doing tech support anymore!  *hallelujah chorus*  Seriously, six years of it was a blistering eye opener to how dumb so many people really are.  Like, scary dumb.  It’s one thing to have a grandma who doesn’t know how to use a remote control. Quite another to have perfectly capable adults screaming and losing their shit because it never occurred to them to a) check if a device is actually on or b) plug it in.  Logic, critical thinking, and reason is not big with the American public.  Kinda explains a lot, doesn’t it?
