Her Friends Were Called Slaves... and She Defended It?
Some background, in the 1990's NYC it was a crazy time for African-Americans (i hate that term so much), anyway going to meet a lady that you met at the club or out and about was an adventure. She might live in Queens or the most dangerous part of the Bronx. After prepping attire and getting ready to hit the subway the next part of this journey usually involved walking through a few shady blocks to get to your destination. On such walkthroughs one would encounter dudes from around the way who might press you (try to intimidate) or stare you down to determine if you were a possible opp. Often as you reach your destination you will have to cross the street and walk through one or several groups to finally reach her apartment. As Cake Lady mentioned in her post this lead to brothers having PTSD, now imagine dealing with that on top of living in NYC at the height of the stop and frisk era where police would jump out on you (blue and whites / detectives) to harass or potentially arrest, it was mentally taxing.
