I love indie games, and my favorite game this year so far is "Cavern of Dreams" by Bynine Studio. I bought it directly for the Switch. A wonderful game, full of charm, creativity, cozyness and secrets that I immediately fell in love with. (I rarely felt so rewarded for 100% completion!)

From Gematsu
Publisher Super Rare Originals and developer Bynine Studio will release Nintendo 64-style collectathon platformer Cavern of Dreams for Switch on February 29 for $12.99 / £9.99 / €12.79, the companies announced.
Cavern of Dreams first launched for PC via Steam on October 19, 2023.
Here is an overview of the game, via Super Rare Originals:
About
Cavern of Dreams is a surreal 3D platformer with collectathon elements, created in the style of Nintendo 64-era platforming gems. Play as Fynn, the young dragon who enters the Cavern of Dreams in search of his unhatched siblings stolen away by a mysterious villain. Explore densely packed worlds full of puzzles to solve, challenges to overcome, and treasures to collect as you get closer to solving who stole your siblings… and why. Secrets and surprises lurk around every corner in the Cavern of Dreams. Discover four open-ended, densely packed worlds, all with their own unique themes, each connected to a main hub world full of secrets of its own. Search every nook and cranny to not miss any of the secrets the Cavern holds. Acquire abilities from the Sage to access new worlds. Put your platforming and puzzle-solving skills to the test to find your siblings and treasures!
Key Features
Collect Them All Each world is full of goodies to find – 40 eggs placed in perilous situations, mushrooms to feed your siblings once they hatch, collectible cards to fill out an Encyclopedia, and more!
Acquire New Abilities – Collecting eggs allows the Sage to grant Fynn new body parts, which give him new abilities! Use your tail, wings, and more to reach areas you couldn’t before and move super fast!
Non-violent Approach – Fynn is a peaceful little guy, so there’s no combat in the game. Instead, the focus is on exploration, puzzle-solving, and platforming. This, however, does not mean there are no dangers lurking in the Cavern of Dreams, so best be careful.
Meet a Whimsical Cast of Characters – Each world is populated with strange characters who need your help. You may chat up a tree, assist a mermaid, or free a sentient soup dumpling!
The Nostalgic Original Soundtrack – Fully immerse yourself in Cavern of Dreams through a nostalgic and mysterious soundtrack, with each world having multiple versions of its theme based on where you are.

Cavern of Dreams Game Design Analysis & Review
Cavern of Dreams
Cavern of Dreams, developed by Bynine Studio, is a lovingly crafted 3D platformer that fully embraces classic N64 era design while still feeling thoughtful and modern. From its puzzle focused levels to its evolving protagonist, the game consistently rewards curiosity, exploration, and growth.
Level Design and Gameplay
The level design in Cavern of Dreams is amazing! Each themed area is intelligently built around the puzzles it contains, making exploration feel purposeful rather than random. Items placed just out of reach act as clear motivation to return later once new abilities have been unlocked, reinforcing a satisfying sense of progression.
The puzzles themselves are engaging and well paced. They genuinely drew me in and encouraged me to explore every corner of the game’s world!
Controls and Character Movement
The character controller feels empowering, especially early on. Having the roll ability available before gaining other powers made movement feel fun and expressive right from the start. As new abilities are unlocked, the game opens up even further and makes revisiting earlier areas exciting rather than repetitive.
Sound and Atmosphere
The sound design is fantastic! Nothing feels missing, and the soundtrack maintains a calm and peaceful tone that perfectly complements exploration. The audio helps create a cozy atmosphere that makes spending time in the world feel comforting and rewarding.
User Interface and Accessibility
The user interface is fun and nostalgic, fully committing to the N64 inspired vibe. Despite the retro presentation, it remains clear and easy to interpret.
The game is also very easy to understand. Even if you figure out the mechanics early on, there are reminders available that reinforce how the controls work when needed, which helps keep the experience smooth and frustration free.
Visuals and Character Design
It is clear that the character design was thoughtfully considered. Each character’s appearance reflects their personality and enhances the quirky charm of the game. A huge standout is Fynn the Dragon, whose abilities and appearance evolve together over time. Watching that growth unfold was incredibly satisfying!
Story and Motivation
The story is simple and wholesome, but it carries real emotional weight. It provides a strong motivating goal and includes a rewarding character redemption arc that gives meaning to your journey. The narrative never overstays its welcome, yet it adds heart to every step forward.
Replay Value
Would I replay Cavern of Dreams? Absolutely! Between finding all the siblings, collecting encyclopedia pages, soaking in the N64 nostalgia, and experiencing Fynn’s evolution again, there are plenty of reasons to return.
Final Thoughts
Cavern of Dreams is a cute and confident platformer that captures the essence of the golden age of N64 games while refining those ideas with modern polish. It motivates you with the powerful goal of finding all of your siblings and rewards that effort by unlocking new abilities that further encourage exploration of its fun themed maps!
Rating: Five out of five toe beans 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 A true hidden gem and a heartfelt celebration of classic 3D platforming. Excellent work, Bynine Studio!
